swapping my starter...easy? hard? instructions?
swapping my starter...easy? hard? instructions?
hey all --
I know there's been a rash of starter failures round these parts...
but, I haven't bothered to pay attn until my car decided to die on me...
so -- is replacing the starter easy? hard?
I've changed a starter before, just not on a Maxima.
Is it as easy as four bolts and the connectors??? Are the bolts accessible???
Thanks all!

FAQ easiest thing.
Quick answer. Very easy.
Remove intake (aftermarket intakes make it so much easier.) With the intake gone and a rag in the TB to prevent anything from getting in the TB, undo the two 14mm bolts (I think that's the size) and the power cable. Pull starter out. Put new one in. Reverse prior instructions for remainder. Very easy.

yes this is pretty easy to do. did mine about a month ago and i was pretty sure it took less than an hour. i guess those guys above already beat me to it in helping you explain how to do it.

I'm getting a rebuilt one...it comes with a warranty, and is WAY cheaper than new or OEM.
If the car was still very new, I *might* consider a new one, but, at this point in the car's life, why bother?

http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/516 talks about fixing the starter whine - but takes you through removal/installation as part of that fix..

uh....you said "No", but then you said to "grease the inside mostly", which is basically, what I asked...so, which is it?

I think "Shift_my vq" thought you were pulling your old starter to regrease it. In that case, you just re-grease the insides. If you are installing a new starter (i.e. rebuilt from an auto parts store/dealer etc.) then you DO NO need to apply grease to any of the parts, including the gear that cranks the engine.

ABSOLUTELY!!!
I just did the swap, and it took just under an hour -- ofcourse, without a bar
to slip over the ratchet (sp?), the longer starter bolt wouldn't have come off...
Thanks for the help everyone! She's back up and running!
