drive in movies gas usage
drive in movies gas usage
hi all am thinking bout taking the max to the drive in this weekend as i got great sound system in it im wonder for 4 hours of movies with car running to keep battery from dying do to high usage of stereo how much gas ill use fer 4 hours of idle time.
I can't imagine it would be all that healthy for your car to idle it for 4 hours straight. It would probably be best to maybe start it every 30mins or something like that for about 5-10mins to recharge then switch it off again. This also won't be all that good for it with the constant starting and stopping, but I would think it'd be better then idling for 4 hours
Theres still a few drive ins around.
When I go, I leave my car turned off the whole time and it always starts when the movies are over. If you have a system, you might want to start it every once in a while to keep your battery from dying.

i thought i heard idling doesnt really power up the battery but it just keeps it charged, meaning it wont increase the charge but maintain its current charge and keep it from going lower. to actually charge the battery i thought the car had to be above idle like around 1400+rpms. maybe im wrong????
I can't believe you'd even consider letting your car idle for FOUR HOURS!!! I would shut the engine off, and just buy one of those portable jumper stations. That way if the battery didn't have enough juice to crank it over after the movie, you could give yourself an easy jump. They're only about $50, and everyone should have one around anyway. IMO, of course.
I would be pis5ed if I went to a drive-in movie and someone just had to bump their system the whole time.

I feel bad for your car...really, that's a bad idea to keep it idling for that long. Just get an Optima battery and you won't need to turn your car on.

^^ Any drive-in I've ever been to had the little speaker box you attach to your window.
But if you need your system on for music then I'd say forget it...you're not going to a car show.

Thanks fellas... glad you got a laugh out of it.
On a serious note: I do not recommend letting your car idle for the duration of the movie... the recommendations to periodically start the car during the movie is probably something along the right track.. I don't have any better ideas.
Business idea: Take along one of those portable jump start boxes... at the end of the movie charge people 5 bucks to start their car if their batteries have died

Here's an idea-
Turn on your radio for 4 hours while the car is sitting in your driveway. If it starts at the end, you'll know that you have enough reserve to leave the car off the whole time. If it doesn't start, you don't look stupid in front of everyone at the drive in jump starting your car.
By the way, what movie is 4 hours long??? I hope its a double feature.

I've never been to the 4 hour double-feature at the drive in, but we went in a friend's Altima a few years ago, and listened to the radio for about 3 hours and it started fine. He was running a 200 watt amp, no problems. If you're listening to the radio, the head unit will pull much less than listening to CD, etc.
