is there a transmission filter?

In a '98 Automatic, is there a transmission filter which needs to be changed? or is it just the screen which needs to be cleaned? I've heard some people call the screen the filter but a mechanic friend of mine was telling me to change the filter too when I do a tranny fluid drain/flush. I figure he would know the difference so now I am wondering is there really a FILTER or only a SCREEN???

I havent really read anything in the STICKYs about changing a filter so whats the real deal? The STICKY says to just drop the pan, clean it, and take the screen of and clean it as well.

It's a screen and doesn't need to be changed. Clean it with brake fluid if it's dirty.

If your dropping the pan, it's the magnets that need to be cleaned. They collect the fine metalic sludge that comes from ware and tare of your clutch packs.

So other than the screen there is no other filter associated with the automatic transmission which would need to be changed right?
