NEED major help...temperature needle touch te sky...

ok guys i need your helop real bad... today i was driving down the interstate about 70 75 mph and I notice the temperature needle close to the line of almost burning... i stop check the coolant and everything was fine...i couldnt open the radiator cap... you know kind a hot at that moment... so i turn around and came back home I let it cool off for about 2 hours... I check after this cool off time the radiator level of coolant and it was to the top...so i tooked for a drive and i went up and down the interstate for about 45 minutes... and the needle never move from where it always stays right below the center of the circle...so what could it be the reason to kick the needle that much... anything would help... I really dont think the water pump is the problem... cuz it would trow it in the air in less that 5 minutes... so please help....

Your thermostat might have stuck shut and not allowed any coolant by. After letting the car sit, the thermostat could have corrected itself. Given mileage and so on, you might consider replacing it. It's much cheaper to replace a thermostat as opposed to a head gasket.

same yr as Kbuitre, '98 SE w/ 105K on the odo, I don't have any overheat issues (yet), but I had a ? - would age and mileage be factors for replacing the thermostat?
