Well, we all know I'm a cheap bastard and I'll find the less expensive way to do anything. I didnt want to spend almost $200 for an aluminum dask kit that I wouldnt even use all of. But, after seeing Ming's car this weekend, I had to have one.

So, I busted out the Krylon.

First, I sanded just a little with 400 grit. Then a light coat or two of white primer. Sand a little again if needed. Then 3 or 4 LIGHT coats of metallic silver paint. Sand a little with 600 grit if needed between coats. Then a couple of coats of high gloss clear.

I love it, it looks so cool. I just did the center console (minus the piece with the HVAC controls). I also did the guage cluster surround. I'll try to get pics up sometime.

Of course, now I just have to keep from nicking the paint...

Faux Aluminum

Hey, sounds like a really great idea! That way you don't end up with this extra "layer" on the base plastic. If done properly, I can definitely see it being an awesome look. You just have to wait long enough for the paint to cure, otherwise you'll end up getting high when you drive.
;-)

Btw, I noticed you said "all red interior lights". How did you do this? Are you talking about the clock, temp, and stereo LED display too?

I went that route too....

But I didn't go as far as to sand it down first because I was afraid to ruin it permanently.

I wish I would have, I wouldn't have to do it again cause it chipped like crap. Now it looks like I am the RICE MASTER.
