painting calipers
painting calipers
i'm thinking of painting my calipers now since they're visible behind the G35 rims. probably paint it red so its close to body color and don't stand out too much. i've never done it before, do you guys use the high-heat engine paint? do you disconnect the brake line and paint the caliper outside or leaving it connected and dangling with a coat hanger? the brackets i can take out and paint so those wouldn't be a problem.
In my opinion, painting the calipers says that I am too cheap to buy 4 piston calipers. No offense. When I see them, I think about how cheap some of the civics look out there. This is purely my opinion and not meant as an insult to anyone. I don't have the 4 piston cal. yet and so I can't call anyone cheap. Right now all of my extra cash flow is tied up in a wedding. However, if you are going to do it, there is some high temp powder coating sprays out there. I believe most of your chain hardware stores will have it. If you can't find it, look online.
Do you have pics of your wheels? I would like to see how they look on 4th gens.

you must copy and paste the link into a new window otherwise it wont work. the wheel gap is hideous and i need to lower the car but that has to wait.

I painted mine red.
I get compliments on them sometimes. But more importantly, I like them, so it doesn't matter.
I have the stock wheels, so they don't show too much, but just enough to be noticed.
I would use the high-heat engine paint because it gets pretty hot down there. I would not recommend even taking off the caliper from the rotor, as it is harder to paint. I would just leave it on there, and tape around it. You only see the part that is in the front anyway. Nobody else will ever see that other part.
1. clean calipers
2. dry calipers
3. tape off everything not wanting to paint
3. spray light coat of paint
4. repeat step #3 after reading dry time between coats. (I did 4 or so coats) Light coats are the key.
5. spray clear coat on after done with base. (2 coats)
6. repeat for other side.
7. You have painted your callipers.
**NOTE: allow plenty of time for the paint to dry. This is inbetween the coats and after the clear goes on. You don't want to bother it until it is totally dry.**

I brush painted mine with tremclad , no hassles with over spray, removed caliper and left brake line on, I chose red as to match other red mechanical parts under the hood. Colour is all personal preference so go with what you like forget what others say, like Big D said any colour looks better than rust!
yeah, the Duplicolor paint is good from Autozone.
That is what i used like 3 months ago, and it is still going strong.
You will want to get some of the clear coat too though. It helps it to shine a little more. A friend of mine painted his with the same color red that I did, but he didn't use the clear. It just looks a little more dull than mine do.
That should work fine for you.
The most important parts are probably making sure everything is really clean, and that you paint light coats, not thick ones. I mean, it will look like you don't really have that much on there after a couple of coats, but it will turn out better and actually faster after about 5 coats than 3 thick ones. You will like it.
**NOTE: When I sprayed the clear coat on the red that I had already sprayed....it turned it like pink. I thought it was ruined, but it ended up drying totally clear. I thought it was some faulty stuff, but turns out, it is really good stuff. Just a warning and letting you know it will all dry clear, with the Duplicolor at least.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago with the vht brake caliper paint thats sold at autozone. It came out really well, and it still looks good! The hardest part of painting my calipers was taping everything off. Have fun and good luck
