I have noticed on my '03 that I hear some road noise in the rear of the car somewhere while I am driving on the highway. If I were to use dynamat to quiet it down, where would the most efficient place for me to install this insulation (doors, trunk, floor)? Has anyone done this to their 5th gen?

I know dynamat can be heavy, blah blah blah, but since I dont race or anything like that I dont really care about the weight...

If your doing it strickly for road noise I would do the the floors and the top. If you got a system I would also do the drunk and the rear deck. Its not going to completly get rid of all the noise but it will reduce it about 60-80% if your lucky and install correctly.

the doors and deck would be the easiest but overall noise still comes from the top or floor. engine noise can be solved by dynamating the hood with special ****. doors would be a simple start. they come off quickly and are more accessable.

 

i used a dynamat knockoff, on the doors, and it killed alot of the tire noise i had (stock potenza's :/)
and sometimes with the windows down, you cant even hear other the other cars you pass

 

Yea I guess I can start with the doors, shouldn't be too hard to tear down the panel. Alright then, I guess its time to order enough material to cover the doors, BTW how much material would I need?

If I hear most of the sound from the rear, you think the rear deck (in addition ti the doors) would make the most sense, huh?

I own an 03 Maxima also and lately, I've noticed a lot of road noise. I'm sure it does help that I drive city streets with a lot of expansion joints which are huge. At 40 MPH, they sound awful. Anyway, check out http://www.b-quite.com. They sell various sound deadeners plus they have a link to several installs. It may shed some light on the idea. I to do not care too much about weight (so what if I add 100 lbs to quiet my car), as long as its quiet. I think I will add a dampener and absorber. Have you checked the rear windows for wind noise? There's a TSB on it.

 

I ran out of the material before i was able to do the trunk or anything. I just did the doors and it was plenty good for me. Maybe if i get more bass in the trunk ill need to dynamat that. Im not sure about costs as the stuff i got was for free from a friend of a friend, but you can get some material in bulk at good prices on ebay

 

did the dynamat in your doors help your door speakers at all or just make the car quieter?
also you can by knockoff dynamat at circuit city or even best buy.

 

ooh You have a really good point. I did look up the TSB and it instructs a technician to put tape on certain parts of the door and going out for a test drive. I will try that and see if this cures anything before going to the dealer.

The TSB does apply to 00-01, I have an 03 not sure if the TSB applies to me or not.

i didnt really notice the "box" effect of turning my doors into boxes for the speakers, but i did notice that the sound quality in general went up a few notches.

I put dynamat in my doors and it help alot. I put quietguard paint on stuff, on the floor, and rear deck, and under back seat, and now the rear deck squeaks. I even put the quietguard in the front wheel wells, didn't help much. I think most of the noise is from the back of the car.

 

Thanks housecor for the web site link. I added the insulation today...and while I was messin' with the car, I went ahead and did the fog light rewire....all done in less than 30 minutes.

 

How much does dynamat go for? How much should I buy (sq. ft.) to do my maxima? Is knockoff dynamt as good? Thanks
