Hard shifting 2nd-3rd fast, is this normal?

Every now and then I find myself wanting to do a quick gear change, but my 2-3 shift is impossible to make! It's not grinding or anything, just won't go into gear, and it sometimes happens when i shift normally. I know Nissan trannies are temperamental, does anyone else have this problem?

I have no problems going 2-3, and I have a STS. 4-5 is a little quirky but I can always get it in. I would suggest changing your tranny oil, that may make the shifts a little smoother.

I'll be changing the tranny fluid sometime next month and see if that helps at all. Thanks!

Another thing to check is a spring on the linkage underneath where the shifter goes through the floor. I was having trouble with 2-3 upshift, the spring was off.. It controls pulling the shifter over toward 3rd when going into neutral out of 2nd...

Could it be the syncros that are worn out in that gear/gears?

MT-90 won't help, I've done that 4000 miles ago and I still get that problem sometimes. As you said, it usually only happens when I'm trying to speed shift and my RPM's are ~6k. It feels like the syncros are locking you out. I haven't found a fix yet, I was thinking maybe an STS would help.

Pharoh: I know what you are talking about. I think its just the way it is... The same behavior exists in my friends 2000 SE.. Ive tried redline oil and didnt help much.. You just have to get used to it and force the gear into place ... :-/

BTW, I have a stillen STS and doesnt help... I tihnk it made it worse.. cuz u need more force to jam the short shifter into the proper location..

It seems I'm not alone with this problem. Could it be the synchro going out, I thought there would be grinding noises involved. I'll check for the spring thingy slfalco said tomorrow. It would suck if this happened in the racetrack, that's another reason I want to fix this...

I didnt have this problem until I installed my pacesetter sts the other day...it takes some strength to throw that thing from 2-3 and yeah 4-5 is a little "quirky" haha. I wanna know what this is too.I don't like it.

With the STS, it will probably break in over time. It should get easier to shift.
