Tranny issue.

Tried posting in the 4th Gen Forum and had no real replies.

I'm getting a messed up sound when the clutch chatters (during engagement)

It's 2x louder in Reverse from a stop than going forward from a stop.

All gears shift smoothly and the pedal feels smooth also.

www.cyberhub.net/video/tranny.wmv

Anyone have an idea what this is?

Does it sound like the source of the noise is being excited by the clutch chatter? In other words, the vibration from the clutch chatter is causing something else to vibrate?

Yes - it does.

I can only tell it's inside the bellhousing. I can't tell what component it is.

if your tranny is fine that crazy noise is normal. Heard that type of clutch on a boosted max before.

Well, if Jaime says it's normal - I believe him.

I also just went downstairs and figured out it is only doing this in Reverse on occassion, and isn't doing it going forward.

The noise I'm hearing when going forward is slightly different, and actually is my 3" Y-Pipe Flex Section rattling against the body. It sounds like it's tranny related because it vibrates even more when the tranny vibrates.

I stuck my leg under the car and stabilized the Y-Pipe with my foot and the noise went away.

So no worries. I was just about to rip my tanny apart...

Thanks Jaime.

yeah mardigras' (matts) car makes a loud metal on metal sound when the clutch is engaged and disengaged. i was shocked by how loud it was. its like a rubbing metal hum/clunk.

Yeah - mine (if you see the video above) was just CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLINK.

Mardi once described it as a "groan" and this definately wasn't a "groan".

So that's why I was worried. I'm not hearing any "hum".

I have a questions regarding my tranny. it is making this weird noise. At idle your can faintly hear it and its sound like something something plastic rotating losely, its really soft and ntot very noticable. When the clutch pedal is to the floor the sound goes away. This sound is very similar to my friends sti tranny but he is missing a pilot bushing in his and mine don't sound nearly as loud.
In 1st you can hear it when slowly accelerating and loudest when engine is whinning down from 3.5k, it sounds like plastic rubbing or grinding against something (it sounds almost like u were to take pencil and rub it against a fast moving windmill or fan except a lot louder.) The sound is increase and decrease with the rpm, definately a rotational noise. Also goes away with the clutch is to the ground.
Same thing occurs in 2nd thru 5th, less noticible the higher the gear and in 5th u can't even really hear it.
I initally thought it was my throw out bearing or my clutch, which needed to be replace anyway but I have that replaced today it the sound is still there. I think it maybe a input shaft bearing or my diff bearing but I'm not quite sure.
Every gear is still very smooth, I have not trouble putting it in gear or anything like that, it still drives fine and didnt seem to affect performace.
Has anyone experienced this before?? My mechanic who changed my clutch said that my old clutch was not in the best of shape especially my throwout. everythings been replace as far as the clucth. I doubt he check the tranny so any suggestions would be great. Thanx

I am sorry I thought it was the groan noise that requin describes. I know when he pulled in my garage I was in total shock. What is that noise? he smiles thats the clutch. okay thats normal.

Oh - didn't you watch the video? It's only like 400k.

What about the CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK in the video?

That's what has me worried - you ever heard that before?!

Dammit - maybe I do need to pull my tranny apart again. ****!!!!

check all the bolts that are taken out during a clutch install. my 3rd gen was making a noise that was the same or very close to it. turns out that the 3 nuts were loose that hold the hub to the a-arm. i tightened those up and the noise disapeared.

Oh - sorry - I figured this out....

It was the heat shield on the Cat had come completely loose on the top half of the Cat and was clanging around in there.

I took that out and haven't been able to get it to make the noise again.

Well, that noise didn't sound anything like a loose heatshield to me - the loose heatshield noise was the other noise I was hearing when going forward.

But I haven't been able to get it to do it in reverse again - so I'm not sweating it unless it starts up again.

Hit 14PSI on the freeway the other day.
