Seriously considering a turbo.
Seriously considering a turbo.
I have been reading up on turbos for about 3 months now and every place I read said that you need a turbo manifold for the setup. I just want to know if the stock VG manifold can handle a turbo or should I change it with the 300zx manifold? If I decided to use the VG manifold would this create problems in the near future?
If your talking about the integrity of the metal wistanding heat, I don't think thier much different then the 300z manifolds. But won't the maxima manifolds need to be modified for a turbo? I'm still learning.
BTW, when you move to SC and visit Atlanta, we gotta create meets here or something.

Mtcookson was saying that he'll be able to weld up some pipes for me if I could find the manifold from the 300zx. Finding the turbo manifold is freakin hard. I tried car-part.com and called a few boneyards. Nothing what-so-ever. So if I could find a way to fabricate the maxima's manifold, which wouldn't be easy, then I have the turbo done in a month. These custom setups are harder than I thought. Oh well challenges are good in a sense.
Oh yeah MrGone - I'm thinking of a VB mod, TC, and a cooler BUT it'll be kinda tacky to have an intercooler and tranny cooler placed somehow behind/under the grill. I'm thinking about giving this tranny a run for its money then converting when I move to SC.

you're not going to find stuff overnight....takes time. i had no probs finding manifolds
I just checked car-part.com and found 2 pages of turbo manifolds for the 300zx!!! TWO PAGES and you couldnt find ANY???? There is even one nearby you; Bill's Auto Parts Tolland USA-CT(Tolland) 1-800-552-4557. Good luck!
It must have just been posted becuase when I did the search yesterday I got that message that said parts not found and then something about changing my criteria. Thanks for the search too
After I come back from SC next week the quest for another turbo max is on.

IC
Oil Cooler
Tranny Cooler
Power Steering Cooler
Fuel Cooler

(dont actually do it though, lol).
Go 5spd if/when it blows. If your planning on converting, might as well not even bother dropping the money on a VB mod. I was going to research that a few years ago but never got around to it.
5spd + Fidanza and you'll never look back
. 'Offing autos is fun though. Just the other day I was driving my mustang around (3speed auto) and was just ragging on it, hehehehe. I really need a tach though. Me fears I pushed it too far (again), lol. No rev limiter + me = worst combo ever.Anywho, If you are dead serious about going turbo, and are willing to travel to the atlanta area, I know a guy who can probably build a kit for you
As of right now I am going to do around 5-6 psi. Nothing spectacular but it's something to start off with. I am going to upgrade the fuel rails , get a walboro 255 fuel pump, getting some NGK Platinum Plugs, and some 300zx injectors.
My setup is simple:
small t3 turbo a/r of .46 if i'm correct
wastegate will be my boost controller (6 pound spring= 6psi) until I find a good but not costly boost controller
Matt93se ground kit
Going to use the stock exhaust until I decide to upgrade the boost then I'll do the warpspeed 3" exhaust.
my downpipe will be 3" and then bolted onto the stock y-pipe.
300zx exhaust and intake manifolds. Saves me a lot of fabricating when I decide for the kit to be installed.
Mtcookson stated that he'll be able to weld the necessary pipes for me if I use the 300zx manifolds.
Think that's it for the moment.
About my three months of reading.
I started reading on turbos when I was about to buy a Turbo Chrysler LeBaron but it's block had a hairline crack in it when it was at idle RPMs. I decided against buying that car. I was giving up on the max because my tranny was dead. If my parents didn't pay for the replacement of it I might be driving a honduh. Search back when I posted about the Lebaron in the general forums. you'll know it was a little more than 3 months (I think).

Almost forgot I am moving to Columbia, SC for college so if I gather my parts up here then I might as well transport them south because my sister lives down there and she's going to buy most of my college materials. That means that I might be able to find someone to fabricate parts for me if it isn't too costly. I'll keep you posted one this.
with the Z manifold setup you won't be able to use the stock y-pipe so you'll need to run it to an exhaust shop and have a custom pipe put on to run it all correctly. Pretty cheap and easy for them.
I'm still working on getting the welding equipment and such. Once I do I'll start messing with some manifolds to see what I can do. I may actually change around the design a bit so that I don't have to cut up any manifolds which would me mighty nice.

How are you going to get the 300ZX intake manifold to work with your stock wiring? I had to change it the sensors didn't work with the stock wiring.
Miguel
ahh, i didn't notice that.
I'd keep the stock Maxima intake manifold. More than likely the Z manifold will cause you headaches trying to get it to work and on top of that they say the Maxima intake flows much better than the Z intake.
talking about turbos is fun though. always brings up new and cool ideas when talked about among a vast majority of different people.

like that kind of an idea?

An idea...yes, but reality of the idea....no.
Good luck with the setup

But Im the only third gen that goes to those meets usually. We have not had one this year really except at Dave and Busters off Cobb Pkwy and the 120 loop. We had about 10 maximas show up and a few other car makes and models.
Here's a few pics of it.. I want $150+ shipping for the turbo and manifold.
http://mattblehm.com/pics/car/turbo/
I cut part of the end off the outlet flange on the turbo, so you're going to need to either weld onto the end of that, or buy a flange from one of the many parts places online. should be able to get one that uses the internal wastegate without a problem, then you can weld onto the flange your new piping and be done with it.
Condition is unknown. I bought it used from a guy and he said there was about 75k on the engine when the car was totalled. He said it ran great and no smoke, but it's been sitting in my garage for a couple years, so there's no telling on it now. at worst it'll need a rebuild- but it's still cheaper than buying a new one.

Once I get back from SC next week then we'll discuss shipping terms. Those are very good prices, best I've seen yet. Can the wheel spin freely? What year did it come from? Can I get a group discount if I decide to purchase your ground kit also
But on a serious note I am getting back on the 30th and is beginning my new job so the first full week in july you can expect my money order for both of the items. I'm guessing they weigh close to 70 lbs (high guess). so total order should be about $300 shipped with the z31 turbo and manifold plus ground kit.

Nah, it's not that heavy.. more like 35 or 40lb, IIRC.
I think the turbo is from an 87 or 88, but don't remember for now. I know it's a T3, not a T28 like they used on some models.
the wheel spins smoothly, but not quite as easily as some other turbos I've worked with. I'm thinking it's just old oil in the housing. blowing my air compressor into the exhaust inlet gets it spinning pretty good.

There's alot of details to be worked out in this project and if you are going to get it done quickly it would be good to know how to work out those details.
On a side note, I can promise everyone that I will have a running/working VG30ET by the end of this week. I'll be running about 7lbs of boost with more boost to come. The only other mod I'm starting with is a 3" cat-back exhaust. More details to come next week.....

Both of the Z T3's that I've bought were the same way. They spun smoothly but not quite as well as others. Not sure if they came that way or what but I do know that they still work very well. They still spool very fast.
I really don't know but you really need to worry more on the hp level. No stock VG tranny can handle 600hp without any modification. There are more factors than just having 30 psi and you're pushin 300hp. It's pitiful.

T3's came on the 84-86/7 (engine change in 87 but some had the T3 from what i can tell). If it has the water jackets then it is from an 85-86 Z.

Yeah really. But I'm confused. He's info says 92se black. But he's using MTcooksen's install info? Not going to be good if that's the case
