Wind noise from the moonroof, just me?

Greetings,

After doing a quick search on my friend's account (he's donated to the .org in the past), we realized that there's not that much posted about wind noise from the (closed) moonroof in '02s. I've gotten sooo used to finding PLENTY written about ANY problem I have with my Max, it's surprising to have an issue that's not discussed much.

I have a pearl white '02 Max SE with 36,700 miles (grrr... should have addressed this 701 miles ago). At speeds above 50 mph, there is significant wind noise from my moonroof which "seems" to have gotten worse lately. This is NOT noise from the rear windows as I've already had that TSB done by the dealer. This is wind noise directly from the moonroof in the closed/sealed position. Actually, the wind noise is significantly dampened (in the cabin) when I close the inner slidng panel. However, I prefer to drive around as much as possible with the inner panel open to let sunlight in (live in SoCal). I shouldn't have to keep the sliding panel closed all the time to enjoy a quiet ride (listening to tunes) on the freeway.

As I said, not sure if the problem's always been there and/or if I'm just imagining that it's gotten worse lately.

Anyone else experiencing wind noise from the moonroof of their 5th gen Max? If you have/did, any problems I should look for or fixes to try?

As usual, thanks in advance for your help, appreciate it

Well Dr_Eeevil this problem seems to be rampant among 2k2/2k3 owners. One of the possible solutions is to take it to the dealership and have them adjust the closed position of the sunroof so that the noise is reduced. What I do is I close the sunroof all the way and then give the "tilt up" button 2 or 3 quick taps and that seems to lift the back end of the sunroof so that the noise is greatly reduced. Notice though that I didn't say gone, I said reduced, the "wind noise" issue in our cars is a problem many of us hate but have learned to live with. Goodluck in finding a solution that works for you!

Just took my 2003 in for this problem, first mechanic was apparently deaf, second mechanic found the problem and he ordered the shims. Taking it in tomorrow to have them add the shims. Hopefully this will solve the problem. This problem got worse over time, strange.

After that's done and there is still wind noise, it may be the rear windows.

Do you have a sunroof wind deflector? I noticed more noise when I had it on, but I ended up taking it off and I think it's quieter.

although I am a 5th gen, not a 5.5er, I took my deflector off and experienced less noise than with it on. I am not so sure about the wind noise though with the moonroof closed. I will pay attention to that next time.

great info

Thanks all for your help, as usual, nothing but Maxima brilliance around here

I'm not sure why this info didn't come up when we did a search? Guess the built-in search engine/function was having problems that day.

I'll first try the 'taps', then look at the deflector, then purchase the shims and try those out.

Housecor is da man with these step-by-step instructions with PICTURES. Hope he realizes how much some people appreciate his stuff

Thanks again all,

Dr_Eeevil

I never have trouble with wind noise with my moonroof closed... (I have a 2000, so I guess this is a 2k2-2k3 problem?)

Glad to help and good to hear the site is appreciated! That noise drove me nuts too. My 4th gen was much quieter - Not so anymore with the sunroof and rear window fix.
