Difficulty of replacing clutch?? / Remote start for 5-speed

I got two questions...

1. How difficult is it to replace the clutch. My car is driving like a tractor trailer now. Its hard to keep up with Toyota Echo's if you know what I mean. I have never done any major engine/transmission repair or mods. I have changed the gear oil. Looking under the car it looks like there's oil slowly coming out between the engine and trans so could clutch be soaked??? What type of special tools are needed to get the job done. I read the How to for it, but to me it was very general and the Hayne's manual seemed to explain it in better detail. Any advice or things to watch out for would be much appreciated.

I see some clutches going for really cheap on ebay (exedy) how does it compare to buying from the online stores. I saw one shipped for $300 than I go on ebay and it has one for 125 ????

I don't race the car to much just strickly hard core stop n go

2. Have any of you guys/chicks installed a remote start for a 5 speed?? If so did you get one made for a manual or did you use this neutral position sensor that the haynes manual talks about. I need an alarm and I'd thought it be cool to have her start like its my *****

your rear main seal could be leaking. You will need the clutch alignment tool. Nearly impossible to do without it. Exedy on ebay is not the stage 1. It is the oem replacement. I did it a while ago with all OEM parts. Now im wishing that i just forked over the money and got an ACT. Exedy stage 1 would be my second choice.

1.) installing a clutch is rather labor intensive. I'd leave it to someone who knows what they are doing. i know it stinks that is cost so much, but it is part of having the joy of a 5/6 speed. as far as you extergy clutch.... don't do it. there is no reason why you need that clutch. the factory clutch is the best if you are un boosted. the factory clutch can handle every N/A mod you can throw at it.

some people have experianced some issues with installing an extergy clutch. evidently the clutch is a little to "grippy" and can over time wear out the tranny and cause bigger issues. (this will start a debate... I know.)

also, when getting a new nissan clutch, there are two type's. one is cheaper then the other. get the more expensive one.... trust me. i got the cheap one thinking whats the diffrence, and it blew out in a year. also, while your doing the clutch, you should replace the throw-out bearing, and also have the flywheel resurfaced. (bearing is about $35, and to have the fly wheel resurfaced is about $70)

2.) I had a remote starter on my 99 5 speed max, and i plan to get one installed on my 2002 6 speed max. the only thing is, is that many places will not do them for you because it is a liablity issue. so you need to find a friend, or see if a show ill just hook some of it up for you, and you can figure out the rest. i didn;t have the neutral switch hooked up, i just made sure i never left it in gear.

i hope this helps.

I put a remote start on my 5 speed, if you put a relay between the two wires under the clutch pedal when you remote start the car it will simulate you pressing on the clutch.

OP: please don't do this. It's dangerous and you could really hurt someone.

don't roll your eyes at me. it is not dangerous. I never park with my car in gear, and i always have the ebrake on. so even if i were to leave it in gear, then it still wouldn't go anywhere. and i had it installed for quite a while, and i never once messed up. it is only dangerous if the driver is absent minded or doesn't use the ebrake, or both.

Maybe you're not absent minded. But are you certain that every person that reads your advice is also not?

I repeat:

Yes, indeed i am not. But you must realize sir, the I was not giving advice, but mearly stating what i did in a pinch. so do me a favor, calm your self down over there, get that sand out of your V***** and come back when you have something usefull to contribute. I have been around cars more then you can imagine, and have owned 5 maxima's in my lifetime. I was just letting people know what they can do if they do not have the money to do it with a relay, or if they are smart enough to not leave it in gear. it's all about options my friend. have a good one.

yes you can. you can have it so the car knows if it is in "n" or if it is in a gear. if it is in gear, then it creates an "open circuit" so the car will not start. but if it realizes it is in "n" then it is now a closed circuit, so it will be able to start. but you must know what wires to tap into, and how to hook them into the "brain" of the remote starter.
