Today I was trying to replace starter. The small mounting bolt came out easy, but the bigger one (17mm) bolt wont move. It's stuck for good.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to loosen it without breaking anything?

 

If you can, spray some PB Blaster on it and let it sit while you go look for a breaker bar. It should bust loose.

 

you need more leverage. it should come off.

What is PB Blaster for? Where can I find it?

 

Think I've got enough leverage. But even hammer doesn't help.

 

Its like WD 40, but a lot better. You can find it at your friendly neighborhood auto parts store.

 

Hammer is not leverage, it's force. What you need is leverage = length and rigidity.

 

PB Blaster is a penetrant - made to help break stubborn bolts/nuts free... As another poster already stated, get some PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench - both should be available at Pepboys, Autozone, etc for 3-4 bucks. Soak the bolt you can't get off... let it sit for 10 minutes... then try to break that 17mm bolt free - you will need to use either a breaker bar or some sort of pipe to get extra leverage than your standard 1/2" rachet will get you... I used a 3ft length of blackpipe (usually used for natural gas plumbing) around my rachet (available at any home improvement store for 5 bucks).

I had this problem not more then 1 month ago on my 99 max....got leverage....had ppl help...wd40...pb blaster...liquid wrench....you name it I tried it. The bolt never even budged =(

I had to get the car towed cause I broke the small stud that comes out of the selenoid for the battery to hook onto. Anyways let me know what happens.....even the guy at the dealership that I got it towed to had a hell of a time. I even used 100 psi and it didn't budge.............

please lemme know what happens!
