99 spare key options

so, the only key i have is broken, and i'm payen $75 for a new from the dealership. what are my other options?!?

I was thinken of making copies and securing the orignal key under the dash near the ignition so the security chip would still work.

but so far i'v been unable to find spares for the max that'll work.

anyone know where i can find some, specifically

thanks in advance

Get copies from any hardware store and attach the broken key inside the steering column near the ignition. This will essentially disable that anti-theft measure and make you like all us less sofisticated max owners, but it'll save you a ton on spares.

Been there done that, I tried holding the original key as close to the ignition as possible, but the car would still not start with a copied key, As far as I know, the chipped key has to be inside the accual keyhole... But that's just from my experience..

I lost one of mine too. I know there's a website with these keys (yes, the chipped type) where it costs only $50 (instead of $75+ like they charge in the stealership). This $50 includes:

1) the key, duh

2) the chip inside the key

3) programming of the chip

somebody remember the website name?

here it's like 90 for a new key... 75 is cheap for me ...

but that website sure would be nice... I need an extra key, and $50 is a lot less than I'd pay at my stealership.

The bottom of your key has a little door. Open it and carefully remove the chip. It's glass and has a rubber band thing wrapped around it. Now go to your steering column and remove the shroud. At the key cylinder you will see a ring that surrounds it. Sorta looks like a magnet. Put the chip on the wire that comes from it. try starting the car with the key. If it doesn't work move the chip around to different spots.

If you can't get it to work buy a DEI 555u alarm bypass. Connect the black wire to ground and the red wire to the ignition wire at the key cylinder. Get $1.00 key copies at Walmart and put the chipped key in the 555u.

Why would you want to disable the anti-theft system, just to have cheaper keys? Mine are expensive too, but I like that nobody can start my car without the key.

I think www.redlinemax.com used to sell those keys that you guys are talking about. Check there. I don't even know if they are still in business or not.

Got a good point. Someone "tried" to steal my car 3 months ago. I had a Viper 791XV w/ backup battery. I don't use the aftermarket LED only the factory. That way people are surprised when the alarm goes off. Well they broke the window, pulled the ignition, popped the hood, cut the battery cables, cut the alarm siren, and couldn't get the car because of the antitheft device. The lights were flashing and paging me still. This was 3pm in afternoon at a movie theatre.

Now I've relocated the hood release. Screwed in metal straps under the driver dash to prevent access to the ignition wires from below. If someone reaches up there without looking....they're going to peel their arm like a banana. Eww!!

If your car doesn't have an alarm. The moment that the keycylinder is popped out it damages the anti-theft ring and they can't start it anyway because it can't read the coded key. I think you're safe. Hide your key WELL or grind down the teeth on it.
