Do you think it's possible to "overadjust" the throttle cable?

Do you think it's possible to "overadjust" the throttle cable?

There was a little slack in my throttle cable, so I tightened it down so there wasn't as much slack in it. Now my gas pedal is nice and tight, and I get much better throttle response when I "blip" the throttle, but it seems like when I go WOT it's running too rich or something. Is it possible that I adjusted it too much, and the butterfly is opening wrong and the ECU is making the injectors spray too much fuel? Just a theory - I don't really know too much about this stuff, just enough to get me in trouble! Any thoughts on my theory?

WOT=Wide Open Throttle...You adjustded the slack at idle, but WOT is still the same. the only way you could "over adjust" it, is make it too tight, and idle would be kicked up due to it, but still your WOT would be the same

yeah, good point. i was just thinking that if i adjusted the idle slack too much, when i push the pedal down to the floor (WOT), it would pull the cable too far and mess up the air/fuel ratio.

When I go full throttle, if I look out the rearview mirror I can see black smoke, and I never had that problem before I started farting around with the throttle.

i should clarify - it's not like i'm spewing clouds of smoke out my tail-pipe, but there is just a little bit of visible black smoke.

i checked my codes, and i'm clean. no ghosts or anything...

for me I'd prob. leave my throttle cable alone on my max, but that's just me

if you're having black smoke that's something that needs to be looked at asap, are you still having the black smoke problem?

there is not write-up....its self explanitory...

Look at the TB, there is 2 cables...the one farthest out is the cruis control (leave that one alone) the one closest to the TB is the one you wana adjust.

where the cable base ataches to the intake manifold is were you adjust it.. there is two nuts on each side of the bracket that its attached too.. turn one to the right and turn the other to the left... and it moves up and down.. or tighter or looser... get it?

just look at it and you will understand...just becarefull not to over tighten it, as it is not good for the transmission in the long run.

i just tightened mine enough to get rid of the stock slack in the cable.. just to make it a lil more responsive..

hope this helped...

as for the smoke....hmmm....check your oil levels, does the max eat up oil? if so check that out...do you have a y-pipe? or race pipe? that could be a factor, in a lil smoke..

keep in mind that a lil bit of smoke from flooring your vehicle is normal.. now i dont know what your experiencing.. but if it doesnt seem normal, check your oil levels frequently, you might be burning oil? check your filter next time you do an oil change? i dunno im just guessing...

I run Mobil 1 and do oil and filter changes every 3000. In between changes it doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil. I do have a warpspeed y-pipe. That's been on for about 6 months.

it might be the Y-Pipe... 2 pre cats replaced by a straight pipe might cause a lil exess smoke..a lil more than norm. that is.. that might be the issue.. i wouldnt worry bout it..

The only problem in adjusting the throttle cable is in having it too tight so it does not close all the way. I think you need to read up on the TPS and how it works, then you will understand better how throttle system works. Your not going to run rich because of what you did.

Cutlr7, I wasn't asking if it's bad to have black smoke coming out of my car. I was asking if it is possible to adjust the throttle body incorrectly and cause the car to blow smoke. thank you for your help though. it's nice to know we've got experts like you helping out on the .org

If you over adjust it your idle will be high or the cable won't retract all the way back to have the idle steady at 65-750rpm after pressing the gas pedal.
