How Much Do You Trust Your Maxima?

My "Check Engine" Light is on and I'm wondering what to do about it...

My car is running fine and I don't know how much faith I put in those "check engine" messages. I was thinking about taking it to a mechanic and get it disabled. If I take it into the dealer, they'll charge me an arm and a leg.

It's not the stupid BS like your gas cap not clicking three times...

So I don't want to damage the car, but at the same time I'm a little ticked off. I just had the 60,000 mile tune up in April and the car is running like a Swiss watch. (Except I had to get one of my ignition coils replaced in May per the TSB on it).

Any thoughts?

You can get the actual code out yourself. Here's the procedure:

Start with ignition off and foot off the pedal.

-Turn ignition on for 3 seconds.

-Then press pedal full and release 5 times within 5 seconds.

-Wait 7 seconds with your foot off the pedal.

-Then press pedal to the floor and hold for 10 seconds.

SES light will begin to blink. 1st set is slow, then a pause, then 2nd quicker set, then 3rd quicker set. This will be your 3 digit code. If more than one after a pause, the next codes will come up. By the way, zero is signaled by 10 flashes.

Factory manual will have lists of codes or I think they're kicking around the site here somewhere. I have the manual so haven't had to lool for it here.

By the way, to clear all codes, Once SES is showing the codes, press and hold pedal down for 10 seconds.

Autozone... and the Dealer

Autozone pulled the code as a bad O2 sensor or too rich of a fuel mix.

The Dealer of course said that they would be the ones who needed to check it, for a cool $75 before they do anything. "A generic code reader will never be as good as ours," they said.

I'm a little ****ed because I just had the 02 sensor replaced in April for $400 installed.

So I guess I'll have to take it into CarMax?

Any suggestions? Is the dealer full of b.s.?

The Generic Codes

The Generic Codes from Autozone were 138, 139, and/or 140.

It can be any one of four different o2 sensors the max has. Just replacing one doesnt cover you. If it IS the same one though, call the guy to replace it maybe he will help you out!

Does anyone know where I can find the SES codes listed? Here or another site?
