I need to know the procedure for replacing the idler pulley on my 95 Max. I was informed by the dealer that the bearing was failing in it-that explains the noises at my cold startups-and I really do not feel the need to pay $180 to have it done-the part is only $65.

Thank you in advance.

I often refer people to a repair manual but cannot find the answer in the book. I'll give you a rough idea of how to do this job based on a visual inspection of my own car.

Go to http://integra.vtec.net/geeser/megamax/60k_service.html
Scroll down to Step 7, Belt Replacement.
Click on any of the thumbnails for an enlarged image.
Perform the first three steps.
Now go back to the instruction which said "You have to loosen the bolt in the middle of the pulley." Remove that bolt completely. I think that will free the pulley and allow you to remove it from the vehicle.

When you have the pulley in your hand, examine the ball bearing. On some tensioners this bearing can be pressed out and replaced. I've had good luck with this kind of replacement by taking the part to an industrial bearing supply house. Even though they do business with big companies they are usually willing to help the D-I-Y mechanic. The counterman can measure the defective bearing (inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness) and may be able to sell you a replacement bearing for less than $10.

If you decide to purchase a Nissan factory replacement, consider a mail-order purchase from one of these discount dealers.

One last question-and I appreciate your help-do you know what the torque spec is for that bolt? I know I need to get the manual-but this happened rather suddenly...

19-24 foot-pounds. Don't be surprised if the bolt is much tighter than that. I've often found fasteners which were installed at the factory to be much tighter than the service manual specification.

high pitch noise?

are you getting that high pitched screeching noise in the beginning of a startup? I get that occasionally but I think it is because my belts are wet...but I am not sure if it is the bearing. There are days when it would screech but others not.

does yours do it occasionally or all the time?

No, this is more of a valve-knock type noise for about 2-3 seconds, and only when cold. It is also coming from the drive belt area.

I have that same high pitched schreeching noise on occasion. I always thought it was the starter getting ready to go out. Any other ideas?
