How the ****ens do you get this out? I removed the a/c line bracket to give some wigggle room. Does the thermostat housing have to come off? Do you remove the cover out the top or the bottom?

the belt tensioner is completely out (including bracket)?

make sure ALL the bolts are out.

 

Yessssssssss, all the bolts are out and the tensioner/bracker is out (I assume you mean the a/c tensioner/bracket). It's just extremely tight.

 

If you have the upper radiator hose and the bypass hose removed, the A/C tensioner removed, and the A/C hose loosened it should come out. I did my '93 SOHC last weekend. I got the cover out from the top, but it took a bit of trial and error to do it. I lifted the front most side out first and kept trying different ways to snake it through the opening until it came out. Even then, it took just a little bit of force to get it past a certain point.

 

try removing some of your idler pulleys and its brackets that might be in the way. I know I had to removed my ac idler and wp/ps idler. if anything is still in the way, then keep removing it. not really fun thing to do cuz it's pretty darn tight in there.

 

pull off the thermostat housing and it comes right out. you can shove it in there without removing the housing, but if you just remove those 4 bolts and spend 5 minutes cleaning the gaskets (and replacing your thermostat like you should be when you're in there replacing the water pump), then it's absolute cake. the hardest part is getting to all those damn screws around the PS pump and the top left one by the strut tower.

 

does any one have detailed instructions on this job? I have a 91 maxima with 330,000 km on it.
