Axles are fun?
Yes they do. Driver side is pretty easy, because all it does is unclip and clip in. The Passenger side is a PITA because you have to remove 3 bolts which aren't in the easiest to get to space. Be sure to drain your tranny fluid before doing it....unless you like huge puddles all over the place when you pop the axles.

cool beans!
Oh yeah on another thread we were talking about how the car won't warm up to 100C even after extended driving time. I tried the air regulator fix with no success. So that just leaves the temp sensor in the front of the engine. You know that one that closes and opens the flow of coolant. Here's the weird part. When the radiator cools down isn't only one of the fans supposed to run? Then the other goes when the A/C is used. I haven't used A/C in over two years so why would both fans come on?

Actually that does not control coolant flow. The thermostat does. The coolant sensors on the radiator control the cooling fans. Since you have a newer 2nd gen gen, I wouldn't be surprise if both fans are suppose to work. I know on the 85-86's, only one kicks in and the 2nd one only turn on if the coolant got hot enough. Or the A/C is running at fan setting 3 or 4.

I don't even think a thermostat is 30 dollars. I think it's more in the neighborhood of like $8-15. Also it's probably safer to let the car run a little cooler than a little hotter, so I'd leave it alone if I were you.

is that your gas price compaired to you gas mileage....if so what is wrong with your car?

Alright lets clear something up. Does your needle go between the inner 2 marking on the temp gauge or it stuck on C?? If it is between the inner mark then that is normal operating temp. That doesn't mean your car is stuck in open loop. (Which, how did you make the determination it still stuck in open loop anyway? Was there like some light on the idiot bar that says hey I'm in open loop still?) The needle does not have to be perfectly in the middle. Draining your cooling system to make it run a little warmer is not only a stupid thing to do, it's dangerous even if it's a little bit. Leaving draining a little leave open space in the cooling system which allows the coolant to expand. If it expands, it will begin to boil. That totally defeats the purpose of having a closed system, which when fully filled will prevent boil-over and raise the boiling point of the coolant. But it's your car, just don't complain when your head gasket mysteriously blows up, or a head warps.
Now do you do ANY highway driving? Running in open loop shouldn't have much of a effect on your mileage. I've left my car in open loop accidently (when pulling codes, I didn't turn the screw back), and I only notice getting a few miles less a tank than normal. So if your car were even possibly in open loop, getting it into closed loop will gain you what....80 miles on half a tank? I guess what I want to know is do you drive normally in city short trip? Is there any excess idling? How often do you floor it? (WOT runs run in open loop)

I live in california I have to take the freeway. No prolonged Idling. No WOT passes, because my car has bad axles. And even before that theres no place to do it out here.
The reason im ****ed is cause i take care of my car. I fix it maintain, change sensors, wash it. It never RUNS RIGHT!
Ive put so much money into it that its not worth it to just sell it or let it go. Yeah we all have problems but for six months I repaired or replaced stuff on my car and the gas mileage is getting worse. I can't mod till its 100%
You wanna tell me that driving in open loop won't hurt my mileage than come down here and fill my car up. Drive for 140miles and run out of gas. Then you tell me what the hell is wrong with it. If its not in open loop the maybe a leak in the gas tank? I don't know
I should just drive it off a cliff!

Dude....how do you know it's in open loop. You haven't answered any of my other questions. How do you expect me to help you if you can't answer my all my questions. I'm telling you, I've driven like at least 3-4 tankfuls on open loop and not realize it until I went to check codes again.. It can't just be that causing your problem. What have you replaced?
The sensors I haven't replaced:
Coolant temp sensor
TPS
Air regulator(i know its not a sensor)
Coil, power transistor(")
Radiator(yet again not a sensor)
FICD
If you car dosen't hit 100C (the temp gauge dosen't hit the middle, also confirmed by the ECU).
Its just past the C mark on the gauge and after that its stuck. Yes I can engage OD but that dosen't mean it fully warmed up.

Lemme guess....you got it from the Haynes manual. Have you confirmed that the car definately isn't reaching 100C just to keep a bad temp gauge from being a factor?? How did you confirm with the ECU you are in open loop? Have you ever considered looking at the A/F ratio feedback on the ECU to confirm it's using the right ratio? Have you check timing to make sure it isn't too far retarded (no pun intended).

Aiight guys. I think both your coolant temps are getting a little high.
MaxSE, your advice is always appreciated. It seems though that it is some combination of skill AND luck that keeps your car in such good shape. Most of us got these cars used, and who knows what the previous owners did to them.
Dr.J, I realize you must be getting really frustrated with the car. From reading your posts it's obvious you take as good care of your car as you can. These cars are almost 20 years old, and it's gonna take time a patience to get them running smoothly. Hang in there. We'll get your car running!

BTW, what was the mileage prior to adding coolant when the car was running hotter?

Before I forget, don't take my posts like I'm trying to jump on your bones, I'm just trying to help figure out your issue.....I just tend to be systematic about it.

That was last week some time
Im not trying to be a *****. I do know how to do some things to my car. Just get tired of being second guessed thats all. No harm no foul. Besides when sarin gives me a hard time I go and read his old threads. Its hillarious!
At this point im praying its a fuel leak.
Yeah I think your right about my timing (im little retarded!)
The chilton says mode two shows what mode your running in. Also it calls for the LEDs to blink a certain number of times in that mode(not sure dont have the book in front of me) 5 times in ten seconds I think.
I guess Ill just work on it after work.
Peace

Wow I tell you, compared myself then to now, there is a total complete difference. I was just like you too! Either way, I'm sorry if I am second guessing you, but sometimes from my experiences, it just causes me to have a reaction on gut instinct. Just don't feel like I'm going after you, and take it with a grain of salt. Everyone starts somewhere Dwayne, you just happen to be unfortunate of dealing with me.
I kinda wonder if you have a leaky injector(s). I remember you said you had a fuel leak before, has that returned? Notice any smell of raw fuel?
