1991 Knock sensor location

Anyone know where exactly on the engine this sensor can be found? I have been looking and can not seem to find it. I need to replace mine asap, any help would be appreciated.

I beileve the knock sensor is on the rear side of the engine, below the exhaust manifold. Are you sure that it is bad? Usually the VG knock sensors dont go bad.

I am pretty sure its the knock sensor gone bad. The car has very low performance ever since I bought it. I have replaced the following in trying to resolve this issue:
water temp sensor
O2 sensor
y-pipe
cat converter
axle back muffler
fuel injectors
vacuum lines
cleaned MAF sensor
fuel filter
PCV valve

I am pretty sure the knock sensor is the cause here. I don't know what else that would cause the car to drive "peppy" when cold and sluggish when warmed up. The timing is retarded most likely from the knock sensor.

Just called the Nissan dealer, they want $167.37 for a knock sensor. Anyone know the best online place to order, or even autozone, napa or pepboys pricing on these sensors?

i forgot how much mine was, but i think it was about 160 ish. the knock sensor is under the exhaust manifold. i replaced mine and it helped but it didnt fix the problem completely. how many miles are on your car?? i suspected the problem was that my engine was with such high miles 160k+. but replacing the knock sensor and using engine restore in my oil every oil change it almost completely cured the problem. or if you want to really fix the problem like i did, blow the engine and get a new one lol

Should I even bother buying the $20 harness that connects this sensor? I hear they tend to get corroded?

My car had 138k when I bought it and now it has 151k. I change the oil with maxlife ever since I bought it. The engine is pretty sluggish when its warmed up, I've replaced everything else that would make it slow.

So is this confirmed that the knock sensor is by the exhaust manifold? the mechanic I took it to today to get the oil changed said it was 3 hours labor since it was under the intake plenum??

The knock sensor for the VG30E in the 89-91 SE and the 92-94 GXE is under the firewall side exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the car.

The knock sensor for the VE30DE in the 92-94 SE is buried in the middle of the motor.

Have you checked to see if you had any broken manifold studs in your exhaust manifold. That might be the culprit too.

spark plugs?
spark plug wires?
cap and rotor?
clean the throttle body?

why not fix the small stuff first before wasting $ on an expensive part that might or might not fix your problem?

After $180 for the knock sensor and $63 for labor, the knock sensor is now replaced. My mechanic said its tough getting to with the engine mount not letting you put a socket right onto. The car did make a very noticable difference with the new KS installed, no hesitation through the revband. However, it still seems to be slower when the car is warmed up.

My next attempt is to replace the Bosch platinum plugs I installed. From what I hear, these engines don't like platinum plugs. I will try out some NGK plugs, so maybe thats the difference.

How can exhaust studs get into the exhaust manifold itself? The studs mount directly to the block.

Studs broken = exhaust leak = lower performance. Good luck

I will say I had the same problem and it was bad plug wires. Do a tune up if you think the wires are old!!!!

the cap/rotor and wires were new when I bought it last October. I may try it out. But what would wires have to do with it being warmed up?

Engine coolant temp sensor. Clean and/or replace it. Make sure the connector doesn't have corrosion also. Good luck

Water temp sensor was already replaced and the connection was not corroded. Had a coolant system test done at Firestone for $20 a few months back, coolant was still good and thermostat was working just fine.

Back to the spark plugs looks like.

What size was the socket that your mechanic used to get the KS out? My harness was all jacked up, the wire from the connector pretty much corroded or got severed off.
