Hello, I am considering a purchase of either a 1998 I30 or 1999 Maxima. I was wondering how the VQ30DE in these cars compare to the 2000+ models.

1. Is it run by timing chain or belt?
2. What is the tune-up interval?
3. Premium or Regular fuel?
4. Distributorless ignition?

Also, any input on which I should choose and reasons why (I30 vs Maxima)?

They are the EXACT same engine, the 2K+ just has a better breathing intake and exhaust (that's what gives it the extra HP) as for fuel, for some reason Nissan decided to make premium required for the 2K+ when it was just "recommended" for the 95-99. It is smart to put at least 91 octane fuel in any VQ engine because it burns slower and prevents detonation. good luck with your car search...

oh by the way, in case you didn't already know this, all VQ engines all the way back to 95 have timing chains, and the tune up interval is 30K, 60K, 90K etc. Belts at around 90K. fuel filter every 30K the platinum plugs should last to 90K.

1) Timing chain.
2) 30K miles.
3) Premium( 91 Anti-Knock Index).
4) Yes.

The '98 I30 and '99 Maxima have the same engine. The two cars are remarkably similar in mechanical respects. The I30 is the more luxurious of the two.
