My car has the "manual" climate control, and I like the look and function of the "electronic" version that i've seen.

Has anyone tried this in 4th Gen? If you have any links to HOW-2's please post here.

I have the 96 SE.

I want to swap them, are they cross-compatible?

The general consensus is tat it is mechanically possible, but it is extremely difficult to do. There is a computer system in there controlling the HVAC system via automated controls, getting input from the four sensors in the car. You would have to change out more than a dozen components in order to do it. D.B. Martin explained it well about a week ago, but I couldn't find it in the search. Daniel?

The automatic climate control is a sophisticated computer-controlled device. It relies on signals from four sensors.
- The in-vehicle sensor, attached to the A/C control finisher.
- The ambient sensor, attached to the radiator core support.
- The sunload sensor, located on the right defroster grille.
- The intake sensor, located on the cooling unit housing.

I agree that this conversion is possible but probably not worth the effort. To judge by past posts on this forum and the alt.autos.nissan.maxima newsgroup, the automatic climate control is more failure-prone than the manual type and replacement parts are expensive.

Yeah

I talked to the Nissan guys at the dealership, and they said it is a COSTLY conversion. Besides the actual unit, there are tons of sensors, vacuum tubes and rewiring to do to get it to work, and it is just not worth it. Just like the Auto -> 5 speed conversion, if you want all those, you are better off selling your car and getting one with what you want.
