Hi all, new to site. how to read ecu codes?? Please
Hello all, My son's girlfriend drives a 91 with 160k+ miles which I have had the pleasure of fixing a few times. Once after a left rear colision which required a complete left rear, junk yard suspension, basic tune up and fixing a light switch problem. Nothing very technical.
Now I'm faced with something beyond my basic mechanical knowledge. The car dead stalls, OFTEN. The problem began suddenly yesteday for no apparent reason. Usually it completely dies as though the ignition was turned off of as if the injectors competely stopped, well .. injecting. Matters not if it ideling or not. It starts right back up but will fail again within minutes. I've looked for ways to extract ecu codes but don't think I'm doing something right? All I can get is the 1,2,3,4,5 codes which I assume are the ecu running some sort of self check.
I'm confident this car has many codes stored considering its past. If someone could please explain the process or point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks,
chip

Um, what do you mean by 1,2,3,4,5 codes? If both lights flash 5 times, it's reading that everything is OK. You can do self diagnosis by turning the mode selector (a little screw on the side) fully clockwise. Wait till the lights flash three times, then turn it fully counter clockwise. This will put you in self diagnosis mode.
Here are the codes, according to the Haynes manual:
Code 11= 1 red, 1 green
Crank angle sensor/circuit
Code 12=1 red, 2 green
Airflow meter/circuit
Code 13=1 red, 3 green
Cylinder head temp. sensor
Code 14=1 red, 4 green
Vehicle speed sensor
Code 21=2 red, 1 green
Ignition circuit
Code 22=2 red, 2 green
Fuel pump circuit
Code 23=2 red, 3 green
Throttle valve switch circuit
Code 31=3 red, 1 green
ECU control unit
Code 32=3 red, 2 green

Code 33=3 red, 3 green
Exhaust gas sensor
Code 34=3 red, 4 green
Knock sensor
Code 41= 4 red, 1 green
Fuel temp sensor, pre '87
Code 42= 4 red, 2 green
Fuel temp sensor, '88
Code 43= 4 red, 3 green
Fuel temp sensor, '89 +
Code 45= 4 red, 5 green
