On the most part, 164 miles I out of maybe 16.5 gallons. Sorry for putting mpj, because I don't even know it.!!!!!!! And the 2000-01 don't tell you the mpj. !!!!!!

miles / galons = mpg

164/16.5 = 10mpg

I don't know exactly how much each mod is affecting your mpg, but it does sound low. I'm getting 16.2 city only, and that's with running the car at idle with A/C on on occasion.

How many miles do you have on the car? When was your last tune-up? Is your car throwing any codes? That is some terrible MPG you got. I get about 22-24 MPG for all city driving. Try replacing your fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, pcv valve and spark plugs. Clean out your throttle body and check your tire pressure. All those items effect MPG so you should notice a substanial increase in MPG if any of the items are worn out/bad.

Well, yeah. The O2 sensor gives the ECU feedback on the stoichiometry of the mixture. Without the O2 sensor the ECU has to operate open-loop. There are multiple O2 sensors, so there is probably some kind of redundancy, but in principle this could definitely affect mileage. (and emissions too, if you have to pass a tailpipe test in your state.)

People in NYC do not get good gas milage.. that's just how it is... city driving in most places is like our highways... It takes me 1 hour for a 15 mile commute.. that's an average of 15 miles per hour.. and i do drive 1/2 that trip on the so-calledhighway...

I doubt that it's 165 miles on 16.5 gallons...

Gas is at roughly 2.30/gal for premium...
how much do you spend for a fill up????? 35 bucks? 40?

you are also probably not running it to the bottom.. which is good, you're not supposed to. But that says that it's unlikely that you are actually using 16.5 gallons on those 164 miles.

I drive on the Belt parkway a lot but also quite a bit in the city... I get around 230 miles out of $30 worth of gas... that's about 13 gallons.. meaning 230 / 13 = 17.6 mpg.. mostly city.. not that sh-tty.. you can never get gas milage as specified by the dealer... especially in NY or any big city...

they estimate the gas milage figures on test courses, not real life city driving.. your car wouldn't get those 20 mpg in NYC even when it was brand new..

it's just that gas is a lot more expensive now and everyone is counting.....

here is the most accurate way to measure your gas milage:

1. Fill up to the TOP
2. reset your trip odometer to record the miles you put on since the fill up.
3. Run it for at least 1/2 tank...
4. Go back to the gas station, fill up to the TOP again...
5. Note the # of gallons that you just put in...
6. Take the # of miles on your trip odometer and divide it by the # of gallons on the gas pump...

There is your true MPG...

What is yor average mph? I notice that when my average mph are below 27-30 I get fewer miles per tank. With a mix of city and highway driving that averages ~30 mph I get around 320 mile per fill up of 16 gallans = 20 mpg. I am not very happy with this. When I go an a road trip and average over 45mph the mileage can approach 400 miles for a 16 gallon fill up = 25mph (still lower than nissans quoted 29mpg, probably because of frequent 40-80+ bursts in chicago driving).

My Point:
If you are in NY averaging 15mph, you miles per gallon is goin to be low. I do not think that replacing an O2 sensor will double you mileage, but it definitely will help and be worth the money.

Yes, 15-16mpg is normal for all of us who drive in stop-and-go traffic only. I'm far from hoping to get anything close to window sticker numbers.

Do any of you get better mileage on the first half of your tank than the bottom half. I will get 200 miles to my first half and only 100 on the last half. Is it just me or does this happen to everyone? Once my needle gets below half tank I just watch it drop.

durckelg has got it right...

Bottom line: It depends on your avg speed. These cars are fuel efficient on the fwy, but throw em' in traffic and there no better than any sports car.

Sounds like your probably averaging under 20 mph, which will kill you on mileage.

I've had my Max for 41k miles, and my personal best is 20.5 mpg, but avg 19.0 mpg. (Mostly city)

Guys it's not so much your avg speed as it is the avg RPM that you run at. When your doing that stop & go driving are you punching the gas peddle? When I used to drive in the city I used to take my shoes off & drive with just my socks to have a much better feel for the peddle .. do this and your milage will improve. This works even with an auto tranny.

Remember if you use "jack rabbit" starts your gas milage goes down.

it works that way on most maximas.. i had 4 and it happened on all of them including my 2000.

the gauge just works that way.. it's not very accurate..

Last trip to the Dells- 200 miles from my house each way I made it back n forth on one tank of gas- with 3 people in the car and some stuff in the trunk, AC kicking. WHen I'm aggressive on the car- on normal daily commute to work I get around 260 miles to 10 gallons of gas, I like to keep my car light so I don't fill up with more than 10 gallons. Average speed is around 80-90MPH with quite a few tripple digit romps. This is with all the bolt on mods and light weight wheels, I also have a S-AFCII hooked up with a onboard WideBand O2 sensor to monitor and adjust my Air fuel ratio. My best so far is 472 miles on a full tank of gas- Mobil 93 only.

Less than 3000? I'm doin 55 at 32 in 3rd and 3000 65 in 4th. But that 16 is prob right up my alley. I take short trips in stop n go.

Well I'am defiantly not going for that 10-13mpg stuff. And with pcv I don't really know yet, but I do notice that the max is drinking less and less gas. Gotabout 24 miles yesterday and the gas gauge did'nt barely move. It looks real good about now.............
