I need ABS... Please help!!!
I found out last night that my 96 SE 5speed doesn't have ABS. I noticed sometime ago but just didn't want to believe it. Come on 96 Maxima SE has got to have ABS right??? Well no, I almost slid into an intersection. Plus when put the key in the ignition and turn to the on position with the car off (not running) there is no ABS light in the dashboard. So how do I get ABS. How do I put it in. And do you think I should get it or leave it alone.
(I think I want it... I just want everyone's opinion good or bad, let me know)

Most abs systems increase stopping distances!
Yes it's true. However, they do aid inexperienced drivers stop straight. I have always ended up pulling the fuse on my cars that had abs. I found them intrusive and annoying. My 93 Prelude VTEC activated the system way to early. My Honda Accord EX, worked OK, but not as good as me. So both those fuses got pulled. My Acura Legend's system worked pretty well, and the mrs drove that one most of the time, so I left it alone. And taught her how to panic stop with the abs system to get the shortest stopping distance. Because you do have to apply the brake differently than non-abs cars. I do the same thing with traction control sytems. I turn them off! And you guessed it, I don't buy automatics either. Cars shouldn't drive the drivers. The driver should drive the car. Of course, that is just the opinion of one very passionate driver, and may not reflect the opinions of others. And in response to adding abs to a non-abs car. Obviously you haven't seen all the plumbing and electronics missing in your engine compartment. When you pop the hoods, you can definately see which car has it and which does not. That doesn't include the sensors mounted on your struts, that you don't see. The others are right, if you have to have it, buy another car with it on it.
You can go here for a POOR MAN's ABS >>>>
http://www.brakeguard.com/bgpi/brakeguard.htm the cost is about $285 all it is a proportioning valve that absorbs the shockwaves that are created when someone slams the brakes or when the rotors are warped, etc. I might actually buy it if I decide to keep my Max. I have some old magazine articles from HOT ROD, etc that actually installed the set on some old muscle cars and the cars actually braked alot better, straighter, and the wheels did not lock up.
I'm with most of the previous on this one
retro fitting ABS to any car is an expensive proposal. It also poses a number of challenges that by far outweigh any benefit. If you have to have it, sell the current car and buy one that is ABS equipt. Just my $.02
