frankensteined tail light question

i have an 02 se with the stock tail lights (chrome ring with red brake lens and orange signal lens). i want to KEEP the 02 tail light with the chrome ring but CHANGE the orange lens to clear and keep the red brake lens, similar to the 01 se tail lights, but without directly swapping the entire assmebly out.
i read the how-to for swapping out the orange HEAD LIGHT turn signal lens for clear and wondered if i could do this to the TAIL light. can i purchase a clear replacement for the TAIL light without buying an 01 se TAIL light assembly and swapping the red/orange lens for the red/clear lens?
can i put the tail light in the oven to open it up like i can with the head light? will i be able to keep the chrome ring i have in the 02 tail light if i switch the lenses from the 01 tail lights into the 02 tail lights? will the chrome ring fit on the "new" lens? has anyone done this? frankensteined a tail light?
