? about MPG & Octane Ratings

I just did a 400 mile road trip, I filled up with 92 at the beginning, got 28 mpg, for the drive back i filled up with 89 (prices were much higher), got 27 mpg coming back. also on the way up i didn't use any A/C, on the way back ran the a/c quite a bit, is this consistent with other maximas?

drag from wind, terrain up hill/down hill, and rpm speeding a lot or constant changes are all things that can effect mpg.

for instance when ever i travel i always get better mpg coming back to nashville than leaving because every direction you go out of nashville is uphill. same thing for going to east tn very uphill, but coming back my mpg is godlike
