Need Help on Girlfriends 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE

She needs to replace her cats because her transmission wont shift because they are so bad. The dealer said that their are three of them she has to replace and that each one is about $650. Can someone shed some light on just how many cats the cars actually have, and what i need to do in order to replace these cheaply. Can i just get a y pipe, and a high flow cat, cause i can get both those for under 600. can someone please shed some light on this for me.
Thanks,
Mike

they were correct in saying it has 3 cats. 2 precats and 1 main cat. a y pipe will only remove 1 of the precats and obviously a high flow cat would be cheaper and replace the main cat. i find it very difficult to believe that all of them are bad at the same time. a bad main cat could cause some driveability but ive never heard or seen it causing the tranny not to shift. i would get a different diagnosis if i were you but the best way to get rid of all of the precats would be headers and a high flow cat.

your exhaust has nothing to do with your transmission.
I don't have a cat and mine is fine.

I agree - I have NEVER seen this problem on the .org....the cats should have absolutely nothing to do with the transmission shifting.

1. I believe there is a TSB on the 2k auto tranny (anyone know?) sorry, I have a 5sp so I don't recall.

2. Definitely sounds like somthing wrong in either the transmission control module. Take it to another dealer and DO NOT TELL THEM WHAT THE FIRST DEALER SAID....act like it's the first place you've taken the car. I'll bet you $$ that they do not say that "all 3 cats are bad" - that sounds totally bogus.

the tsb is a cure for slipping between the 1-2 & 2-3 shift. replacing both the tranny soleniods and tcm are called for. if the slipping has caused enough damage, it may be too late even if these parts were replaced. is her check engine light on?

Sorry to confuse you but it could be the MAF. If there is a huge delay in shifts, loses power, and sometimes does not shift past 4500rpms then it might be the MAF
