Tranny bleeding and whining

For the last couple of days my tranny has been making a whirring sound in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. It might also be there in 4th and 5th but I can't hear well at those speeds with the wind and road noise. It's been driving fine and shifting fine. Today I went out to my car and there is a 8x2 foot tranny fluid puddle/stain on my driveway. Not good. I'm reading Nadir's post about the differential bearings and I'm thinking that might be the problem, but I just wanted to get other people's thoughts/experiences.

The car is going into the mechanic's Tuesday to have a clutch/flywheel put in, so I have an appointment set. I'm basically posting this to get an idea of the problem so I can order the correct parts Monday and save myself some loot by just having everything done all at once.

Thaose are all the symptoms of the diffy bearing failure. Either get a 98-2001 tranny, or get your's rebuilt. If you get yours rebuilt you need to make absolutely sure they shim the bearings correctly or you will have the same problem nadir is having now. Read this for more information http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/804. I don't know if you'll be able to get another tranny by tuesday, but even if you have to delay the clutch/flywheel you should definitely get it done at the same time since to do those the tranny has to come out anyway, so it shouldn't cost any more for him to put in the new tranny. Good luck.

Hmmm, I'm weighing out the whole rebuild/replace issue.

Anybody know if you can get tranny/engine packages together that would save $$$? I wouldn't mind having a spare engine laying around
