wrong. I have the updated MAF. didn't do anything to the ECU when I put the updated MAF in......runs perfect!.

BTW, to reset the ECU all you have to do is unplug the battery for 30 mins or so and then plug it back in...it'll automatically reset. The dealer is FOS.

out of curiosity, how much did the dealer charge you for the updated MAF?

The only person who can update the ecu is the dealer, if you alreeady updated the Maf then you might as well pay the extra 44 dollars to update the ecu. you wont have to worry about it later, or blowing another maf sensor because you didnt update it.

you do not need to update an ecu to accomodate a new maf.
btw, i am also curious how much the dealer charged you for the maf. if it's
over $100, you probably got hosed.

I actually would like to know which dealer is charging $44 for the update of the ECU I have been quoted $160-$180 for the update. I do how ever have a p0420 and need an update for that reason.

BTW one dealer mentioned that something about a different update with the updated maf sensor which I had replaced myself awhile back.

I assume you work at a dealer, then? The only person who can reset (aka "update") the ECU is anyone who knows how to disconnect the battery cable. To my knowledge, our ECU's are "self-learning" and adjust to changing conditions/changing equipment readings.

That's like saying "you might as well take 44 dollars out of your wallet and set it on fire." Makes no sense.

keep thinking that....blown MAF is not a result of the supposed "ECU update". In fact, the MAFs blow because they are a terrible design, made altogether too fragile and Nissan hasn't gotten off their A S S es and designed one that doesn't blow. Guess what, millions of other cars out there do not have a MAF problem. Why can't Nissan make one for our cars that works.

UCI - If your MAF is working fine, leave well enough alone. The "updated MAF" does not give added performance - it is simply (supposedly) less prone to blowing....

definitely update the ecu. Like a computer it is a software upgrade. It will not learn "enough" on its own especially if u have an intake. My opinion and other org members. For less than $50, y not have the best program avail, and ive heard of better gains. Any dealer will tell u to update but they are the specialist of our cars. Would u not listen to specialist in any field?

why? because the dealers are (often) full of ****. They are there to make money. They are there to take YOUR money. Sure there are honest dealers and service techs, but there are plenty of others who will inflate service costs, tell you that you should replace things that aren't broken, etc...

And experts? I was talking last week to the new service manager at my local Nissan dealer. turns out he's only been with Nissan for 2 months. For the 15 previous years he was service manager at a Chevy dealer. There's your expert. There are ALOT of guys here on the org that know FAR MORE about the maxima than most Nissan techs - remember, someone here may know everything about the 2000 Maxima only - the dealers have to know about ALL YEARS OF ALL NISSANS....you think they are "experts" at every Nissan issue?

So, if you believe that the dealer is the undisputed expert when it comes to your car - I have a bridge in Brooklyn you might be interested in buying....

If you ask me, the $160-180 is a rip. When I called on my P0420 they said they updated the software while it sat on their computer. This was for $98. I'd suggest calling around to a few dealers.

Josh!!!!!! Do not fight!!!!!!! Some people here do not understand that dealers are there tp take your money.
For example today I took my car for oil change (free BTW!!) the guy call me and he said " Mr. Did you know about the fuses for the Cruise control needs to be replace.... "blablabla...", so I asked how much it can be? the guy said about$145!!!!! plus tax.

When I pick up my car I bought both fuses for $45 + tax........

P.D.: Be aware about this guys....They are not your friend!!!!!!!!!1

btw - what the hell are the cruise control fuses? i've never heard of anyone having to replace CC fuses.......I've certainly never had to do anything to any cruise control on any car I've ever owned.....

you sure they didn't just change the air in your tires

Actually I do need to update my ECU but not for the reason of a new MAF. I remember there was a glitch with the O2 sensor that I have and I need to get the ECU updated so that my CEL turns off.
That is the only reason why I would update my ECU. ANything else, I'd leave it alone or just go to Technosquare.

To clarify, I don't mean dealers, I'm talkin about service techs who have been workin on Nissans for years, and talked to on the side. No sales pitch involved and more than one. I'll do it because im meticulous, and believe theyve seen and worked on more maximas than me. I'll post when I do.

hey, it's your car - do what makes you comfortable. As for me, my experience is that in most cases I know more about the car than the local Nissan techs - the guys who "can't duplicate the problem" or say "there's nothing wrong" when I know there is....Dealer only gets to see my car if it's a warranty problem that I have pre-diagnosed by myself or through "other" sources (.org, other people who know maximas)..that way they can't B.S. me.

Meter-Air Flow.....aka Mass Air Flow Sensor...it tells the car how much air is coming in so the engine can determine how much fuel to mix with it (basically)....

You should buy a Haynes manual for the maxima at your local auto parts store.....keep it handy to look things like this up, and it will have pictures to show you where it is and what it looks like....

an ECU update and reset are different things. The update is actually installing new software while the reset just clears the software that's already on it. Hence "update" and "reset". Makes sense right?
