K&N Air filter question

Is it worth spending the $40 for a K&N air filter. What will I gain/loss on my 98 SE? My main interest is fuel economy!

Minimal difference on the K&N. If you want fuel economy, try a y-pipe. Should help a smidge.

Fuel Economy!!!??? Come on, where is the love? Get CAI with full exhaust, AND Get a Supercharger!

I doubt a K&N would increase gas milage, but if your filter is clogged/dirty then you might as well get the K&N, they are reuseable.

Cat-back = sound, no perf. gains or fuel economy.

Fuel Economy? Should have gotten a Geo Metro .
Doesn't the K+N Air Filter offer better air flow and you don't have to clean it as often as the stock filter?

aahh, generally you dont clean stock filters, just throw them out, if thats what you mean.

There's no real dyno gains with a K&N.

Will the K&N filter offer a better air flow, which will increase gains for the ypipe?

i installed the k&n simply because paying 35 bucks and having a product for the life of your car is far better than paying 10-15 bucks for a paper filter every 10-15k miles or so. That was my logic.

Wait until all that oil in the K&N gets sucked into your Throttle body and causes !%^#$%@#

I've never heard of that happening in a properly oiled filter. When I clean/reoil mine I let it sit overnight and let all excess oil drain. Has anyone heard oil from filters going into the TB?

I was using a K&N for over 155k miles. It just got too ragged after so long, so I recently replaced it with a Fram AirHog.

Also, I got 32mpg on my last highway tank. 2400rpm (68 mph) locked in the whole way.

You said it "properly oiled". K&N is fine for high rpm racing applications, but over time if you overoil the filter you can cause dirt buildup in the throttle body. Hell, racers rebuilt the motor after a few races anyway!

How do you like the air hog? Can you use the K&N recharge kit with it?

The airhog is exactly like the K&N (well, actually, it seems to fit the airbox better), except it's orange and the pleats run short-ways instead of long-ways.

There is an airhog specific recharge, it costs the same as K&N. But, they are both cotton gauze/wire mesh filters so I dont see why you couldnt use either cleaner for either filter. I used the K&N kit on the no-name autozone cone filter I had for a while.

I already have a K&N recharge kit- that is why I was wondering.

Actually EPA says 22/27 5 speed and 21/28 auto. You mileage may vary depending on your right foot!!

You might see a a 1% boost in fuel economy with a K&N. Better to get a CAI or at least Stillen + K&N intake. You will see maybe 2% gain. The sound is great with a free breathing manifold too. If you drive 100 miles 5 days per week, in one year year you will save $18.34 at a 1% increase in fuel economy.

I got 27.47 on my last tank of mostly city commuting (65%) with the remainder at highway speeds.
