http://www.carfax.com is a good place to see the history of you car (hopefully a clean slate). But to tell what transmission you have...well... shouldn't you know? Either automatic or 5spd manual.

You don't. Contact your state's DMV or Dept of Licensing. You give them your vin and they can run the info for you. Takes about a week but it's free. Request them to fax it to you for faster results (no waiting for the mail)

That tells you about accidents and odometer fraud etc. If I understand you correctly you just want to know what options you have that you might not know about. You can find instructions on how to decode your VIN for this sort of info in the faqs.
