Weird sound from 1st Gear

When I accelerate hard through first gear I get this real loud like overspinning sound when i clutch to shift to second. It's been happening since I've had the car (120,000) now just broke 130,000 on a 1996 Maxima SE 5spd. Ideas??

Personally, it sounds more like a transmission issue. Try a synthetic fluid swap. Redline MTL works pretty damn well. About$7/quart, but well worth it.

definitely a transmission issue. Might just be as simple as the fluids

If it happens as you are moving the gearshift into second it is most likely the second gear synchro spinning up. This is not normal and indicates wear...

Thanks for the input guys - I dont think its the syncro's because it happens at the end of first gear if I am really on it. It's like something is freely spinning - and it stops once I shift into second.

Its like rev - Clutch in - Spinning noise - Shift to 2nd - Gone.

Where would I find a DIY guide to going to synthetic transmission fluid for a 5spd?

Just get a Haynes manual. The information in there is priceless.

check the fluids section, they should have a whole lot of helpful info there.

Either way if fluid change doesn't cure it (doubtful but cheapest fix) requires pulling the tranny or leaving it til something breaks off and thrashes your disc, pressureplate and flywheel or tranny gears, not good eitherway but who knows it's held out for 10k already, just pointing out the consequences, but ultimately it's your call. Hope you're mechanically inclined
