Weird check engine light codes and cruise problem
Weird check engine light codes and cruise problem
I have a 97 SE with about 86K on her. About a month ago she tripped the check engine light. I checked the codes and gave me the following readings: Knock sensor, Speed sensor and Automatic transmission control unit. The vehicle still runs fine. The only problem that I noticed now is that the cruise control sometimes quits on me. When she quits the green cruise light starts blinking and she lets off. If I wait a while later after I disengage it sometimes I can turn it back on. Sometimes when I start up the car the O/D light will blink on me right away a couple of times. When that happens, I cannot use the cruise at all after I start her up. I have no idea whats going on. Maybe my ECU is going on me? Someone please help!!
I think you need to replace a Vehicle Speed Sensor. That should take care of the problem, including the Automatic Transmission Control Unit code. As for the Knock Sensor code, I would wait and see if I get the code even after replacing the VSS.
Thanks man, I will try that and see what happens.....do you happen to know how much thats gonna run me and if I will be having problems doing it myself? I installed CAI, change my own oil, lowered the max and did the exhaust work myself - just to give you an idea of what I can myself.
I've never done this myself, but I know the sensor is mounted on the transaxle case. So you can see it and reach it without removing anything. Obviously you can replace it yourself. As for the cost, I have a record when a Nissan dealer replaced it a few years ago and will post it when I get home.
My local Nissan dealer quoted me $23.xx for a brand new vehicle speed sensor. Quite a deal from a dealership! He actually went in the parts room and checked to see if it was that price because it was so low
I've had that VSS code for a while now, I'm just too lazy to fix it, and I couldn't find where it went on the transaxle when I looked one time. If you replace it (sounds easy enough), PM me and tell me where it goes, better yet, take a picture

it's easy to replace, i did it.
if you remove your stock airbox up to the throttle body, you have plenty of room to do it...well a decent amount.
basically if you look at your fuel filter, then look down at the transaxle and you'll see a white tube wire cover, that's the wire that goes from the sensor to the wiring harness for it. i had trouble at first getting the speed sensor to twist out so i stuck a flat headed screw driver in there and it popped it right out. goodluck with the install.

I found it. It was actually last year, three months before I joined the .org.
