what is a Tranny cooler someone please tell me n what a good one for 90 max

 

A tranny cooler is a micro-radiator so to speak that mounts infront of the radiator and allows tranny fluid to run thru it to cool the fluid on automatics. The main reason autos fail is due to overheating. As far as a good one, I just bought a cheap one at Advance Auto Parts and my already slipping tranny never got worse over a year. Others might suggest certain brands, I went low-budget. You dont have to get the biggest one either. There is a FAQ about it here somewhere, I'll try to locate it for you.

 

Ok Heres another good one. Go to the junk yard and find a 84 to 89 300z turbo auto look in the right fender well and it sit right in there. It will work for your auto and you could get it cheap

This site, as well as others that I was able to find on your typical search engine should help you out on what a transmission cooler does and how its beneficial to your car.

IMHO, unless you live in super cold climates, transmission coolers will be beneficial. If you live in an area where its always cold, it might not be as beneficial because your transmission fluid would take longer to get up to normal operating temperatures. As is though, it should extend the life of your transmission by keeping fluid temperatures closer to the bottom half of its operating range within extended uses. If you tow frequently or like to take extended trips, this is a big plus. If you follow those links, or search for installation on the web, you'll find helpful links. It looks like a straight foward installation and shouldn't be to hard. Keep us updated

stupid question.. but why a tranny cooler for an auto but you don't need/they dont make one for a 5speed?

 

Because in a 5-speed the fluid is just bathing the parts to lubricate them. It is under no pressure and doesn't perform work like in an auto. So, a cooler is completely unnecessary.There'd be no way to hook up a cooler anyway, unless you tapped into the housing and ran an external pump to flow the fluid through the cooler.

 

So thats what that cooler is for on a 89 300zx, I pulled a turbo engine at the salvage yard like 2 years ago and took the cooler from the right front bumper thinking it was part of the turbo excessories, I thought it was for cooling the turbo Oil.LOL , I still havent put the turbo in but I guess when I do I don't have to wory about that anymore.
