I know there was speculation before about there being either a different muffler or a straightening of the b-pipe to add the hp. I have also heard that the power comes from a redesigned intake. Anyone know?

One other thing, has anyone dyno'd a 2k1 5spd yet? I understand that they are all cali-spec now so would be curious to know how they dyno in comparison to the 2k fed specs.

It may all be academic soon since the new altima and maxima look to be faster. It will be interesting to see how they got the 240 from the 3.0 in the Altima (as rumored at least). Hopefully, it is something we can duplicate.

I think the 5 hp just comes from using the I30 muffler, which is larger. The engine is the same as all the other models.

Well a new muffler is a good guess... I thought that maybe it was a frog hanging form the rearview or a new set of badges...

Muffler

Don't forget that the I30/AE muffler has the same part number as all the rest of the mufflers. The tips are different, but I think that is it. I think the 5 hp really comes from the marketing department.

The extra HP is claimed to come from the exhaust system but not the muffler specificly. Perhaps their Y-pipe is different or a higher-flow cat?

That's what I'm wondering. I've heard all these things but I haven't heard a definitive - for certain - answer. I mean they couldn't have done much. Did they take the exhaust off the I30? Gotta be a simple answer but the difficulty in finding it makes me suspicious.

Boy are you guys IG-KNOW-RAY-MOOSES or what?!?!? Don't you know that the extra hp comes from the AE floor mats!!!!

Seriously though, I too thought it was from the I30 muffler. And Jazzy8, how can both Maxima mufflers have the same part number, even if the only difference is the tips? I don't believe that the muffler is sold without the tips... that sounds crazy. Have you confirmed this first hand?

Hey John, what's up? Anyway, the extra 5hp is from the y-pipe. The piping diameter of the stock I30/Max AE y-pipe is larger than ours.

I called Nissan 6 months ago

I posted it on here back then. The extra HP is from the front muffler and larger diameter B pipe. (It's either the B pipe or Y pipe) I'll search the archives.

It is not from the rear muffler.

Hey Jerome!

Shoulda just asked my Tampa Maxima friends!! It makes sense that's where it comes from. That would be the easiest place to get the hp. Makes more sense than the muffler or intake.

This is somewhat relevant in that the AE shift module AND the 2000 both have the same part number, but they are different. So, the mufflers could be different but have the same part number.

Paul - what is the "front" muffler?? Are you talking about the resonator where the b-pipe is located?

I have seen the part numbers 1st hand. I compared my 2000 GLE with a new AE on the lot (with down-turned tips) and they are both "Calsonic" with the same part #.
This is from Car and Driver, Oct 99 in a rewiew about the I30...

"Under the hood, the previous I30's 3.0-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6 has been reworked to make 227 horsepower, 37 more than the previous motor. Contributing to that extra horsepower are revised intake and exhaust manifolds, Nissan Variable Induction System (NVIS) air-intake control, new equal-length exhaust pipes, a new engine-control module, a larger air-intake chamber, and a new variable-capacity muffler "(see Technical Highlight: Nissan page 90)" borrowed from the Nissan Skyline GT-R. This muffler gives the I30 five more horsepower than the same V-6 that's in the Nissan Maxima."

Not that Car and Driver is the ultimate resource, but thought you might enjoy.
