Transmission Resistor

Last week i had my tranny rebuilt. Before they rebuilt it they said it might need a new resistor that would fix the laggy first to second gear shift.

I was wondering where this resistor is, how much it would cost, and how hard will it be to replace myself?

Also is there any other way to fix the problem?
ECU maybe?

Its behind your battery bolted near the bottom of the strut tower if I remember correctly. In that general area anyway. It is a rectangular box with writing on it (JECS?). Hope that helps.

Yep, it should be located in front of the driver's side strut tower like 4th and 5th gen Maxima's.

Its that black box right on in front of the strut tower behind the air-filter box.

I think its this one that is circled in yellow. Auto owners, can you verify this?

I found it.

Yes thats it but it's below the air box.

I have a VG. Maybe this is the difference.

I also called the dealer to get a replacement, $88 for the damn thing. Do you think this even the problem?

Ifit is were can i get a cheaper one? Junkard?

Yeah, or someone on this board who is parting out they're VG. I say, if you can live with neck-snapping 1-2 shifts, just remove the resistor The resistor IIRC allows an 'X' amount of line pressure to adjust shift firmness/quickness.

If he removes the resistor he'll be rebuilding his tranny AGAIN in the near future.

BAD Idea. very bad on a VG. the tranny just can't handle it and you'll burn up the clutches and shift solenoids in a matter of weeks. ask me how I know

Let's just put it this way.... I got REALLY lucky when I totalled it and didn't have to rebuild the transmission.. I'm guessing it had about two weeks left in it before it was time to take it to the shop for a rebuild.. one month before I totalled it, I put a switch in there to disconnect the dropping resistor when I wanted to drive it hard. after about 10-15 runs on it, the tranny started throwing error codes, and after about 2 weeks, it was beginning to mess up on the shifting and was flashing error codes at me every time I started the car or changed gears using the lever.

I didn't think there would be that much difference from VQ to VG

the VQ tranny doesn't exactly like it either, but they're much stronger than the 3rd gens.... they can take a bit more abuse.
I'm surprised the S/C'd automatic 4th gens don't have as many problems as they do. 300hp on a 3rd gen would kill a tranny in days.
