What's in your manual tranny?

I cracked open the drain plug on the manual transaxle on my '93 SE and found it full of that red automatic transmission stuff. I know that's spec for the manual transmission of a Ford pickup I have, and maybe it's fine for the Maxima, too. Dunno.

Do you guys run the red stuff or use more traditional gear lube?

I'd run gear lube -- ATF seems a bit thin to properly protect the moving parts. MT-90 is a good synthetic gear lube that people here use.

I had an old Talon that someone ran that in. I changed it as soon as I got it, but it already had a syncro grinding. Best to get it out now and go with the suggestions you have. Redline is really good.

Good Luck! Joe

Are you sure it's not just red transmission oil and you are sure it really is ATF?

MT-90 is red I think... (can't remember what it looked like anymore).

The stuff that drained out of it was golden/green.

purple gear oil here. i've heard of people running atf if a manual tranny but that scares the hell out of me. i hear redline mtl is supposed to be thin like the atf but properly protect and lube the gears. its also available in gl-4.

So, I guess black fluid in my gear box is a BAD thing, huh?

(disclaimer - I'm just joking, btw... I'm running redline! )

I use Royal Purple i believe it said it is compatable with Gl-4 and Gl-5. Not sure but my maxima loves this stuff. When i change my gears i noticed a much smoother gear shift. My rpms seems to be a little better too like it picks up fast but this may be in my head. THis stuff is like a thick purple goop and is like 8 bucks a bottle. I definately reccomend this stuff for your tranny

Yeah purple is safe to use instead of GL4. GL5 eats synchros in nissan trannys cause it has twice as much extreme pressure additive in it than GL4. Purple is expensive but its good shiot and cheaper than a rebuild.
