Advice - first time using slicks

I got the 15x6 Mazda Millenia 9-spoke rims and mounted the M&H Racemaster slicks on them... 26x6x15 I believe (26" high for sure). I have not raced on them yet but will be going to on Wednesday and then on Saturday. I need to know the following:

1) What tire pressure should I inflate them to?
2) Before very first use, how long should I burn them in the waterbox? What about each run after that?
3) What RPM can I safely launch at, coming out of the hole with these? I will play with clutch slide vs drop, but does a 5000RPM clutch drop off the line sound unreasonable?

Any other advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

If you figure out how to do a burnout without rolling forward (e-brake on) and not pegging the limiter let me know. I was trying to do a burnout with my DRs and I couldn't modulate the throttle in 1st without pegging the limiter and the car kept going forward even though the rear tires were locked. I know that I should probably shift to 2nd once the tires are spinning, but I fear hitting 2nd while rolling out of the water box could results in a destroyed clutch, axle, or differential.

If I remember correctly, Neal never did full blown burnouts with his slicks. He simply revved up and spun them a bit just on the track side of the water box.

As for PSI, you'll need to experiment. I'd say 18 psi and see what happens. If you're spinning, take them down a little more. Once you're where you want to be, keep an eye on the pressure because you want to keep it where you're optimal psi is. Also, if you do figure out how to do a burnout, remember that you'll only need to do one because only you've burned off the old rubber, you should be good for the day.

As for the launch, I know Neal was doing 5000rpm clutch drops with no problems however I know I30Mike tried the same thing and his clutch said no thanks. I think the safest bet would be to launch at 4500rpms with a quick clutch slip and see where you end up. High rpm clutch drops sound to risky to me.

I can give my two cents even though I never did a successful burnout or even a launch.

As for what Dave said, Neal does do a fairly decent burnout with his slicks w/o being pulled forward. However he explained to me how to do the burnout did not work for me. I actually burned my clutch when trying to warm them up, not from the launch. I let the car sit for a while after that and tried a run without warming them up and pulled a 2.0x, but my clutch was still way to hot and it just slipped the whole way down the track.

So, as for warming them up I can't tell you what worked for me because it didn't. But what Neal and others tell me is just to roll up, get them wet, pull out of the water a bit, set the e-brake, pop the clutch at 3K-4K and modualte the throttle till you see smoke, let the ebrake off and let the car get pulled forward.

As for the launch, that is the simple part. Tach it up and drop the hammer. I would try 4K at first and go from there.

I am most likely going to the track wed and plan on going ***** out. I will have my Greddy SP2 installed tomorrow and plan to take advantage of the DR's this time. I pulled 2.1's all day last time w/o warming them up. We will see what happens

Good luck man!

Oh, and like 12-13 psi is what you want

Wow only 12-13psi on the 26" tall slicks? That's crazy low isn't it?? What did Neal run his at? I think he used 26" too didn't he?

As for burnout, I too did my burnouts the way that Neal described it to you on my street tires, Mike. We'll see if the same method will work with the slicks. I used to stay in the waterbox.

Good luck with your visit to the track Mike! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice Dave and Mike.

Anybody broke something using slicks (not DRs)? I heard it's pretty hard on the drivetrain. Neal seems fine but what about others?

After running mine this weekend for the first time, everything seems fine for now. I did just over 20 passes on them.

I do have a brand new tranny as of last July and brand new axles as of this summer.

With all of your mods listed, did you get 13s on slicks? What rims are you using, are they lightweight?

13s N/A is pretty rare... nice E.T.
