Transmission fluid check

Hi there,
I just spoke to a friend of mine that says some automatic transmissions require a special procedure when checking fluid level. Mitsubishi's cars require being in Drive when checking level, I thougght I'd check if Nissan requires the same? Anyone know?

Or should it be checked when engine is off?

Thanks,
/Daniel

It's listed in your owner's manual.

run the car through the gears, let it warm up a bit, then engine running, in park or neutral.
