High RPMs in first gear
Hey everyone,
I'm experiencing high RPMs in first gear (>5000 rpm) before it drops into second. Other gears switch smoothly when driving. Recently I "repaired" the MAF sensor by re-soldering the three electrical contacts inside the sensor - if I did this improperly could that cause this issue?
I checked the transmission fluid level and it looked good. O/D light blinks several times occasionally on starting - so my tranny is trying to tell me something.
Thanks!

Since your OD light blinks that means theres something worng with tranny and something could be wrong with your first gear. But i would try to change the tranny drop resistor which is a sensor for the transimission and control tranny fluid when it shift and if it goes bad it causes erratic and harsh shifts. Its right behind the mass air flow sensor. Here is a pic. change that and hopefully thats all that is wrong with tranny.

You can get one from the junk yard like picknpull or one from the dealer for 61.00. Here the part number 31037-71L00. Here a website i use that has all the original nissan parts and they are selling it for $45.00 http://www.nissanpartsdeal.com/parts...agram=310_A001 scroll down and look for Resistor Assy-Auto Transmission - Part Code: 31037

Awesome, thanks for that. Can I also ask if you think it is really dangerous to drive with the car in this condition? Should I take it easy on the old girl or just drive carefully until it is resolved?

I tried it once, very hard on the trans. Short term wont hurt it as long as you arent pushing it too much.

What it will hurt is the motor mounts as the hard shift will put a lot of stress on the engine mounts and maybe even the axles. If you keep driving like that your trans will go bad. A bad tps sensor shot my tranny on my Nissan Quest.

your engine computer "talks" to the tranny computer. Before trying the other stuff, try disconnecting and re connecting the tranny computer harness. With these old cars, electrical connections get corroded / loose over time, and that could wreak havoc on the system. I'm not sure where the tranny computer is, it's either behind the plastic panel on the passenger seat. When sitting there, you would kick your right foot to the right to hit that panel. Or, the tranny computer is in the center console behind the radio.
