Is anyone running A/F controllers on N2O?

After my trip to the track last night, I need to start tuning, and figure things out. I want to get some kind of air/fuel controller, or something that can tune the system. I have never ran any "electronics" before, and don't know what I should look into. Any help or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I use the S-AFCII but you also need a wideband to tune it.

I think its worth it. I couldn't control my a/f without it and its much cheaper than any of the other controllers.

Basically it intercepts the signal from the maf and depending how you program it, it will either add or take away fuel at preset RPM's. There are a total of 12 settings at a minimum of 200 rpm increments.

I make a run, log it on my wideband, see where I am richer or leaner than what I want and then make adjustments at those rpms until I get it exactly where I want it.

Fairly easy to install, 5 or 6 wires to hook up and it also has 2 memory settings, so I use on for N/A and one for spray.

You and go to a dyno and use their wideband but I prefer doing it on the track or road using real conditions. I tune to approx 13:1 N/A and 11.5:1 on spray.

Mine was set at 4000-6200 in 200 rpm increments but I have extended it to 7200 now that I have the limiter raised.

Your a/f will also change due to temp etc thats the main reason I want a wideband hooked up constantly.

Here are some for $244, $20 shipping.

I asked the same question of Jime in another thread last week.
With the S-AFC II you can have 2 settings, so you have 1 for N/A and one for nitrous. You can only have one with the S-AFC. You would have to change it when going from N/A to nitrous.

If you run the Safc 1 and have it set for your nitrous, can you just turn it off when running all motor driving around town?

Do you have pics? If it looks good, and is in working condition I’ll take it off your hands. Let me know if he finds the wiring harness. Do you have instructions / box / stand?

No, the settings must be changed, you cannot turn it off. I tried that too.

I was thinking , is the Safc hooked up to a power source and ground...could it be hooked up to the on and off switch of the nitrous so its turned on when only spraying?

Nope, if the power is turned off there is no connection between the maf and ecu.

it does everything from controlling ur injectors to a/f and u can get the greddy E-01 boost controller and u can tune with it. lets just say that u can do everything with it.

also u can hook it up to the o2's, knock sensor and some other things.

im getting the boost controller also since im going turbo in a couple of months.

Can I use that on a 99 Cali Spec max? I have heard about nothing but problems doing anything with the ecu for a 99. My car has the chip in the key which makes it impossible to change the computer. If it is a piggy back system, then could I use it, and if so can you use it to raise the rpm limiter? I'd love to move to a MEVI, but it isn't worth it without revvin' to 7200...

Tap the emanage is a piggyback ecu and can be used on the 99's it just intercepts and changes certain signals for you. I use the emanage as awell as some of the other turbo guys. the downside is we can't raise the rev limiter to 7200.

There has got to be a way to "adjust" the rpm. Maybe when they make an ignition box for V6 distributorless ignition systems they will have something.

My first one was the wbo2 from Australia, around $400 US, works with Palm and PC, had great success with it.

The one I am currently using is from FJO which I bought because it integrates with the NX Maximizer which is made by FJO so I only have once piece of software for everything. It is a little more expensive but has 5 times the sampling rate.

The old one sampled 110 times between 4k and 6k at WOT N/A the FJO did 550 samples. I am not sure I need that great an accuracy but nice to know its there.

On fjo racing, is it the KWB3002 Wideband AFR System Controller Kit
Dual Channe or MAXIMIZER nx kit? Sorry I'm having a bit of a hard time. Sorta looks like the maximizer comes with some sort of wideband controller, but it also says that you need something in addition.

The Maximizer looks good because I'm getting n20 in the next month therefore I would like something to tune it, and while n/a. So the maximizer with safc2 ? Thanks for your patience everyone.

Yes that is the dual channel, I have the KWB3001 single channel because thats what I have been using on my old system. Thats what FJO told me to get to connect directly with the Maximizer.

The Maximizer software will not handle the dual channel (yet). It has provision to read the wideband in the software and has a connecter to hookup to a narrowband or wideband, however it will only work with the FJO wideband. The KWB3001 is the minimum kit that will work with the Maximizer. You should also buy the optional cable that hooks direct to the Maximizer too.

I am just going to start retuning with the FJO wideband and S-AFC II over the next couple of days and will be trying it out at a race on sunday if it doesn't rain again. My a/f currently varies between high 11's and 13 as you can see by the pic. That will flatten out as soon as I get out on the road and do a little tuning. Oh ya that is N/A, where I will tune for 13 vs 11.5 on spray. That is 3rd gear in an auto. As you can see I don't have to worry about being lean with the headers.

Jime, Are you still running a two stage kit? And what should I look into since I have one of the more unique two stage kits, where stage one is dry, and stage two is wet. Both stages work great, but I would like some real control after this "head"ache. It looks like I will finally get around to replacing the head this weekend, and I really don't want to burn up another valve. I was hoping that If I tune the SAFC-II to N/A, and for dry shot, The wet shot will work on the N/A setting since I am adding fuel anyway. Since when did race cars need all these electronics anyways?

No I don't run the 2 stage anymore, it wouldn't hold traction when I hit the second stage with a 50 in the 1st and a 100 in the 2nd after the 1-2 shift. The Maximizer only utilizes a single stage which you put in a large set of jets and then control it electronically.

Not sure what to tell you about the dry and wet together. Its not the way I would go but it may work ok.

I tuned my N/A yesterday and this is what it looks like now.

I started out with just the SAFCII. However, you then need a wideband to tell you what the a/f is so you know what to set it to. You can go to a dyno but a/f changes with different temps, atmospheric pressure etc so to keep it at the optimum you need to have your own. Every time I go to the track I have to adjust for the conditions that day. Thats why a preset fuel map is not the way to go if you want to get the maximum from your engine.

Just a wideband can be bought fairly cheap, $300 or so maybe even cheaper.

My Maximizer was $550 and the FJO Wideband was $350. However they integrate together and the Maximizer will shut down the nitrous if the a/f goes up to a preset #. Mine paid for itself yesterday, I was doing some runs N/A and then decided to try a 50 shot. The car hiccupped a couple of times but my time stayed at a 13.5. I checked the log at the end and saw that my a/f was still at 13 what I have it set for N/A, I forgot to change over to the nitrous setting on the S-AFC II and the nitrous cuts off at 12.5 so it probably saved my engine. Thats why I switched from my previous wideband to the FJO.

A sufficiently trained fool can overcome any safety measure.

Jime,
Can the FJO wideband shut off nitrous relays even without the NX Maximzer?

Tony it won't do it on its own, its actually the Maximizer software combined with its hardware and the wideband input that shuts it off.

I tried integrating my Tech Edge with the Maximizer because pretty well all widebands have a 0-5 v output but no go. I do have a fair electronics background but it was to no avail. I contacted FJO about the input to the Maximizer and they said
"Hi Jim,

The Maximizer was specifically designed for use with the our wideband AFR
system and use of another unit may give unpredictable results. Due to the
wide variation in quality of wideband units available today, we could not
guarantee that the operational standards of the Maximizer would not be
compromised and so there are no plans to expand support for other units."

Ya ya BS but they made sure it wouldn't work without their setup. The A/F shutoff is such a valuable safety feature I decided to just by it and then try and sell my Tech Edge unit. It does make me sleep better at nite.
