strange squeal

letely when i start my car after its been sitting a while it squeals...not high pitched like crappy ford v belts from the mid 70's but its enough to make me want to fix it, i can also make it sqeal when i turn my lights on right after i start it and it goes away so it leads me to belive its the alternator belt...only thing is i replaced all the belts and i made sure they were tight as hell, granted i know they'll wear faster but theyre easy to replace so i am wondering...

#1 could my alternator mount have slipped?

or...

#2 is it TOOO tight and need to losen it up

i dont think #2 because it sounds like a lose thing, or are there any other things like pully bearings or some other crazy thing....as long as its alternator related then i get a new alt for free (lifetime warranty)

try some belt dressing first. it could also be a bearing going bad too. alternator bearings are replaceable, but nissan alternators are a little difficult to disassemble. and I'd question the availability of a new bearing.

you don't want it TOO tight, the extra tension on the alternator will chew through the bearing. I overtightened the alternator belt in my blazer cos it kept squealing. turns out it was the bearing, but before I found that out I tightened it to the point where I accidentally bent the rotor shaft, and the rotor was rubbing against the stator coils. THAT was more annoying and spine-tingling than any belt squeal. needless to say, that destroyed the voltage regulator and caused the alternator to put out over 25 volts, pegged both the voltmeter and ammeter in the dashboard, and burned out both headlights.

heh well if its the bearing then i'll take ti to shucks but i am gonna try tightning it or losening it because it may have jiggled the werid tentioner thing a little loose....i shoulda used lock tight....i finally get all the belts fixed and then another belt annoyance....its still good though its only got mabe 500 miles on it?
