Does anyone have any Pros/Cons/Comments on an oil cooler
I think that Stillen sells one but Im not sure, but I plan on making mine on my own. The reason I am considering one is that I will be supercharging in the next 6 months and I am thinking that it will be better on the engine to have one. Im not sure were i would be mounting the actual cooler but depending on were I do mount it, there could possibly several feet of tubing to the cooler and several feet back. Does anyone think that there would be any problems with oil flow to the engine and back? I want to put one biggest cooler that I can fit, and I also want to do this prior to supercharging, would there be problems with doing this before the supercharger is on? Also does anyone think that this will have a benifit for the engine, or would it be just a big waste of money?
You need an oil cooler if the oil temp goes too high. (Duh) So you could add the cooler just to be safe. But, you don't want the oil too cold either, because then it won't evaporate the moisture and unburnt fuel in the oil. So the first thing you really need is an oil temp gauge. A safe high oil temp depends on what kind of oil you use. 240 for conventional, 300, or so, for synthetic.
Now, my personal experience when I road raced motorcycles, is that oil temp stays ok up to a certain level of engine load, and then just a little bit more can make it shoot up 30 degrees. You have to be running at true, WOT, at high speed for 30 sec, or more to really drive up the oil temp.
