Re-grease or Replace Door Hinges?

I have a 95 GXE, 5 speed. My door hinges front and back, drivers side and passengers side, don't seem to close as well as they used to. They seem almost "Sticky" at times and dont close smoothly. Has anyone had any luck relubricating (regreasing) them, what did you use and where did you use it? Or is this a "replace" only item.

Thanks, Mack

I had the same issue with mine. Just coated them good with a pure silicone spray (better than grease, imo) and they were good to go!

I just fixed this yesterday on my two rear doors. I used WD-40 with the little red straw thing on the nozzle and sprayed WD-40 right into the top and bottom metal hinges on the doors (not the small black shaft that goes into the door). Then just swing the door back and forth for about 30 seconds, then spray again and swing again. I did this about 4 times for each door. They open and close like new now. With just a flick of the wrist they close again from the full open position.

I did that with the WD40. After a couple of time during the course of the year, I gave up!

WD-40 is not a lubricant... you can use it to help clean out the gunk from the hinge, but then should use a silicon lubricant to grease the hinge.

yea its not a lube, if your antenna needs lube get some white grease, or some Mobil 1 All Purpose Synth Grease

i believe there was a few threads about this a couple of years ago and there is a part that can be replaced that will make it like new. lubing/greasing it will make it better if it's slow or creaky, but replacing that part will fix the tough to move problem. i'll try to dig up the post later if i get a chance.

I did mine a couple months ago. The back was so bad that you had to push the door closed. If you just tried to swing them closed, they would actually stop short of closing.

I used WD40 to clean them out, basically the same method as mentioned above. Then I stood there for another fifteen minutes swinging my doors back and forth and packing them with grease. The grease will help lubricate and more importantly, it will help keep crap from getting in there again.

I also whiped as much gunk off the hinges as possible with some rags after the heavy dousing with wd40. If you watch where the hinge surfaces overlap as you open and close them, you can see what parts need to be cleaned.

Mine swing like new now, just be patient and you'll get it.

I think that's the limiter that keeps the door from swinging out too far and from not slamming closed once you have it open (the small black plastic piece). In some cases I think that gets fouled up and causes problems. Replacing it fixes it obviously.

I thought that was my problem as well, but I removed one of mine to take a good look at it and the door still had the problem with the plastic peice removed. Unbolting it from the car frame will tell you the same thing (without having to remove the door panel to get it out).

Here is some info from the MAXFAQs regarding this problem:

Q: The door hinges on my 4th generation Maxima seem to bind and squeak. Is there a fix?

A: YES! Here's some information from George:

The "Link-Door Stopp", PN# 80430-51U01 is what needed to be replaced when my front doors started "binding". They also called it a door stay on the work order. Nissan calls the part a "countermeasure part". Replaced under warranty. The rear doors had the new type part already.

I used some white lithium grease on mine and it worked wonders. Sprayed and worked it in on all four doors for about 2-3 cycles per door by just moving the door back and forth.
