check the battery terminals first.

You are on the right track, but without knowing whats going on with your car their is no accurate depiction of what the exact problem is.

Check the battery terminals to make sure they are not loose or corroded. Then get a volt meter and you can then move on to ground connections. If you don't have a volt meter .. a long wire and a bulb will do also.

Battery and brake light on means your alternator has stopped working.

I had my brake and Batt light on me, and I had heard it was my alt going out.
So I kept it in mind to replace it soon. I kept putting it off, since my car never lost power and it had been over 2 mo. since the lights first lit up.
Then one day it happened, I was in traffic on an upper deck when all lights got dim( night time) and my radio turned off.
and car eventually died.
Alt was DEAD and battery was drained.
Had to get pushed to an exit ramp and coast down to a parking lot and wait for a tow truck. Not fun.
Some say it could be the connector that plugs into the alt, It comes loose somtimes somehow. Check that first.
IF its not that, keep the failing Alternator in mind.

I'm having this problem too. My Passport 8500 is showing 13.5V+ so my alternator is fine (I just replaced it about a year ago). My lights only come on for a few minutes at a time, or sometimes they just flash.

when my brake and battery lights came on it was my freakin acc belt shredding off on the middle of the highway. I considered myself lucky to have not lost my idler pulley.
