Steering fluid VERY dirty?

Took advantage of the Nissan Free 100 point checkup again. Sufficed to say, I really don’t there checking everything they say they are. None the less, they did catch a shimmy in one of my wheels slipping before it caused me any problems. My check engine came on last week then shut off by itself. I didn’t get to check it yet, so I figured they’d find the issue for me. Didn’t happen. Checked it myself and it ran 2 codes. One for my speedometer, and the other forget.

….but all that aside. One thing really stuck out in my head when they gave me there evaluation sheet. The comment “steering fluid VERY dirty. Need to flush.”. Call me crazy but I didn’t know the steering fluid could get dirty. Can someone shed some light on this? The Haynes manual doesn’t even have steps on how to “flush” the resovior, just on how to “bleed” it. Maybe Im just not reading things right.

All comments welcome.

I had my P/S system flushed, didn't see much of a diff. but was advised that if I didn't flush it, the worn fluid would wear away at the system leading to a costly repair, so I only spent $45

do take off the hose though, just not the one mentioned in the motorvate writeup. Take the one off closer to the front of the car. It will empty out the reservoir.
