Y pipe questions

Hey guys - I'm new to this board. I have a '98 Max SE auto - 65k miles. Runs great (especially after I just got the knock sensor replaced!). Anyway...question regarding replacing the Y pipe.

I know it's stated that it is 'illegal' to replace since it removes emissions eqpt, but...

1) has anyone actually failed an emisisons test w/o the pre-cats? I would think that the primary cat should suffice once fully warmed.

2) for NJ people only - has anyone failed NJ state inspection w/a replaced Y-pipe? I know they became much more strict a year or two ago. They physically check if cat is in place - unsure if they can actually see the pre-cats w/mirrors - or if they even check for pre-cats.

3) finally - I am sure opinions vary - but it looks like I can't go wrong w/a Warpspeed SS. Thoughts? Then - what is a good cat-back exhaust? I was looking at the Stillen - other suggestions?

TIA - John

1.) drive your car for 30-45 mins before emissions test
2.) N/A
3.) Correct. CustomEnterprises ss y has been promising
4.) greddy sp2, obx

also, refer to the FAQ's and stickies at the top as well

There have been a lot of y pipe questions in the last 2 weeks. check previous threads. also, if u donate, u will be able to search.

Thanks for the quick reply

Thanks - yup, I did review the sticky's - hence the follow-up questions. It looks like a Y-pipe is the biggest bang for the buck. But the NJ state insp does have me a little worried.

Hey - what wheels are those on your car? They look great!

For the dollar-conscious buyer, would you guys recommend a Budget or a Warpspeed y-pipe?

for the dollar-conscious go with budget SS, or a used one.. i just ordered a used cattman SS, just look around, but yea, all y-pipes give around the same increase in HP +-1hp. Cattman has the est fittment, but also the most expensive,
warpspeed has a GD for 160 shipped, but thats for the aluminized one,
budget is around 219 shipped for a SS

i havnt heard of any problems with any of these except the warpspeed aluminized, happyricefob from cali said that hes getting a weird noise after it rained... so ionno.. just look around the forums and make your choice, any other questions just ask!

oh btw...
