gas smell in car (winter only)
gas smell in car (winter only)
Hello everyone!
I'm just looking to see if there is anyone else with a 93maxima gxe
that is having a problem with a gas smell that is only happening in
the winter time. The smell is only inside the car but no smell outside,
this only happens when I first start the car in the mornings.
does anyone have a fix for this or know what the problem is?
thanks,

What Dan said.. very common problem... the rubber lines are old and they develop tiny cracks in them that begin to leak when it gets cold outside. best option is to replace them, but it requires removal of the intake manifold. (PITA). If not, then try tightening the clamps and see what happens.
make sure it doesn't get too bad though- I've seen a lot of Maximas in junkyard because of engine fires caused by this.
Just wait, you'll see this posted at least 2-3 times a week until the country thaws out in the spring.

Ah, ya, there's one nasty hose under the intake manyfold. I bought it from Nissan like a fool only to figure I'd have to pull apart half of the engine to get near. Tightening the clamps on it does not work for the last couple years so it almost leaks in winter, at least sweats with gas.
I'm also having this problem. I've read the Haynes manual on this procedure and I'm about to take my intake off to replace the hoses. What else should I replace while I have the intake off? Should I replace the injectors? My vg has 113K on it with the original injectors (I think).

if you're low on $ then just change the rubber lines and that smell should go away.
don't forget to get few fuel injection hose clamps too.
I just finished the procedure. I replaced only the fuel line on the passenger side. I looked under the intake with a flashlight and was able to see the passenger side line "sweating" with gas. The drivers side line was ok. On my vg the passenger side line can be replace without removing the intake, though I had to remove the distributor cap for more room. It's pretty tricky to fit the new line in between the fuel rails without taking everything apart, but it can be done, took about 2 hours. The fuel injection line at NAPA cost me $5.37 for one foot, only needed 4 inches though, so I'll have spare. I replaced the fuel filter while was at it (NAPA Gold, $9.37). Plugged the fuel pump fuse back in and she fired right up, no leaks, no fuel smell. The old fuel line was badly deteriorating. I figured if I didn't replace it on my day off, that it would explode on my way to someplace important. If I every have to replace the other side, I'll definately replace the injectors and everything else while I'm under there.
