Replacing stock Bose HU only...

I'm thinking about just replacing my crappy BOSE HU with a nice MP3/XM radio HU. I personally think this "premium" sound system in the car sucks a$$. Do you guys think it's mainly because of the Clarion unit in there or the Bose speakers or a combo of the two? I would think replacing just the HU would improve the performance from the stock speakers?? Also, is it possible to still use the stock subwoofer with an aftermarket HU? Thanks in advance for any input.
